I think you can get the 40Gb Ps3 for $20 more and that's new rather then refurb.

I guess the two items are not all that similar but the PS3 functions well as a Blu Ray player and is the only profile 2.0 player that exists at the moment if I'm not mistaken.

If you into video games... It's an easy choice. But,.. even if you aren't the PS3 still has plenty of reasons to be the best choice for a Blu Ray player.

They're definitely different beasts. With the Samsung player, you get 7.1 analog outs for advanced audio without upgrading to a new receiver, you get both TOSLINK AND coaxial, and HD-DVD playback. Like you said, with the PS3 you get BD 2.0, better upgradeability, a game machine and media streaming - even a browser. Kind of depends on what your priorities are. In my case, I'm definitely getting antsy to get advanced audio - which means I'm now shopping for a new receiver. Ooops! Guess the PS3 wasn't so cheap after all!!!

That $380 price does look like a really good price if you're interested in the Samsung player.

ecrabb,

I just bought a Denon 788 refurb for $304. But,.. I am going to try to cancel the order tomorrow if I can.

Circuit City has the Denon 788 for $399 with free shipping and free $75 giftcard. If you think you can use the giftcard then the effective price is $325 shipped. (Esp for me since there is no sales tax here.)

Just thought I would mention it because... I'm shopping for HDMI Audio AVR too.

FYI, I just returned a Samsung 1400 because it stopped playing regular DVDs. Googled the error message and it was no where near being uncommon. I'd take a 40GB PS3 over the Sammy.

Actually you don't. They claimed they would do this on release--but they didn't. Then they claimed they would release a firmware update shortly after product launch that did that--but they still have not.

Frankly, it is anybody's guess if there will ever be a firmware release for it that will allow it to do TrueHD and DTS-MA. Given Samsung's track record, I'm not holding my breath.

Also, this product has been very problematic. And given Samsung's track record (and my experience and research into their products), "refurbished" from Samsung literally means, "One customer got sick of the POS product we sold them and returned it, so let's try it on another moron and hope they don't return it also!"

In other words: BUYER BEWARE!!!
