Ya know, there is a difference. Guys like Peter will jump on different bandwagons as trends come and go. You and I, we'd walk a mile for a Camel...err.... CRT projector.

Everyone calm down. CINERAMAX is refering to me as he saw me the other day out in front of his store holding up a piece of cardboard that said, "Can you spare a couple of g90s for a poor soul such as me"?

Then I really pissed him off when I tried to hit on Ugo!!!! Twisted Evil

What a dick.

Its like that song by the Cure "Jumping someone else's train"

A line in it says "if you jump on it quick you can say you were there." Guess he is there , and we are left over there. Wink

Yo Cliff, check out this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=822442

Read Peter's response about him bitching about some clown calling himself the Film God. (I think Pete's jealous because someone is infringing on his territory). Then read Dizzman's response to Peter's post. Hysterical! Very Happy

Maybe he can't use a digital cam but the pictures of his projected image look terrible. Colors are muted and lacking the subtle shading differences like a crt. Looks really soft too.

And what a retarded website. He needs to take a web design course.

His big claim to fame a few years ago was installing the HT for some pro football guy. He's riding the coattails of that install. I'm sure he knows what he's doing, at least to some degree, but for some reason the +20K guys put up mostly with his crap. I think only because he works with these high end sets that not a lot of people in the HT industry get to play with.

Yeah, this month. Next month the SUPERKONTRAST will be a POS and the SUPERKONTRAST II will be the sh*t.

I realize a guy who's installing a $100k projector doesn't need to worry about such silly pettiness, but can you imagine how much the F'ing bulb for that thing costs?

Oh, and W T F is with their web site? They're supposedly designing and installing world-class HT systems and they're not smart enough to hire a decent designer to build them a site that's a step up from "community college web 101-class"?

Some people...

I guess the whole high end thing goes against what I stand for. Do it right, but do it on the cheap as well. I know that occasionally that has lost me a job in the past, but with my technical knowledge, I (usually) install stuff that works right the first time,a nd can come in at 1/3 the price of the super duper high end sales guy.

Kudos to Peter for upselling the sh*te out of everything, but his hoity toity, ' Do as I say, otherwise you're wrong' attitude is not required. If I didn't know him and were a potential custom HT customer, I'd kick him out of my place before he got 1/2 way through his sales pitch.

Those that have the money and want to keep up with the Joneses and believe his whole song and dance, I'm sure they are a good candidate for his systems.

overclkr wrote:

Exactly. Coming off like a pompus ******* like that is just wrong. I'm not saying I'm perfect but this "I all am all, therefore I am, everyone is wrong, and I'm right" kind of attitude and proclaiming a projector that has a native 1500 to one contrast ratio is the TOP performer on the market is crap.

I don't go around to everyone and proclaim the G90 stack to be the best of all front projection systems and RAM IT DOWN everyone's throats and I would expect the same from anyone else.

Like I said, I'm not perfect, but just trying to gage why somebody would choose what they did and try to get to know them better and get slammed, well, let's put it this way, he is lucky that is his theater thread because I would have gladly gone to town with him.

His other comments I've read like "2 or 4K 3 chip DLP is as good as 70mm film" is crap as well. There is NO WAY a 2 or 4K DLP is going to do as good or better than 70mm film.

Either way, it's not the end of the world, and I'm not even mad anymore. I'm moving on but will keep my opinion until proven otherwise. I'm glad Peter enjoys his work and has accomplished what he has. I'm sure it's kick ass but STOP RAMMING YOUR OPINIONS down everyone's throats all the damn time.

It's old........

Spanky I wasn't trying to give him crap. I wasn't trying to come off as an ******* at all. As far as SMX or any other product, everyone has their own opinions and has a right to them.

I would NEVER use a torus in a home theater. I have seen several high gain torus screens and never liked one of them. I'm not a fan of High Gain screens period (although the way the market is going with digital, I'm going to have to go high gain to get the kind of light output I crave on my screen size when I go digital).

Peter also made a comment about the G90 being "dull and drab" to which I strongly disagree with as well. First of all, when he did that G90 setup, we did not have digital paths to CRT like we do now along with gamma tweaks. It was a night and day difference when I went digital in my video chain. It's sharper, better colors, and flat out better than any analog signal that you could send to a CRT projector for sure.

Anyway, sorry if you took offense to my comments. I was pissed off and even contrary to my last post, I will chill now.

Cliff

Curt,
I thought maybe you might have met him at CES.

I was probably a little over the top when I read Zebu's reply. To take one post or thread and label them a "prick" was to much for me. What I am about to say will probably piss some people off but so be it. Peter is a good guy and I like him and consider him a friend, but he is Cuban. Until I moved to Miami, most of the Cubans that I had met, known or friends with were (are) great. One of my best friends in Raleigh is Cuban. Once you get to Miami, it is a little different. A lot of the Cubans are for the lack of a better word arrogant. This is even more apparent in the ones that came over from Cuba. I have a theory this may be a compensation reflex for getting beat up by Fidel. Anyway, Peter does have a firm belief that his approach is correct. Since on an individual basis I can let it go, I do as I am interested in HT. Now, how about my review?Smile

I will make this about the theater.

First, this is probably one of the most expensive homes I have ever been in. It is in a gated community on the bay in Coral Gables. This house is easily over $10 million. Once inside, Peter took me and his friend back to the theater. I believe the theater structure was already constructed, so Peter just had the room to work with instead of a clean sheet of paper. The room is fairly narrow with rising seat platforms. He had the equipment in a closet in the back of the room by the pj. The pj was in a little space above and beside the bathroom, which is behind the theater. The room is covered in blue fabric and wood accents. The chairs were light colored.

I believe his equipment list is Dynaudio speakers, Denon head unit, Blu-ray player, Levinson amps, Barco DLP pj, SMX automated masking screen and TRW fan. He mentioned he had a budget and I think he blew it on the pj. Of course the fan is $10k.Smile I know there is more to the equipment list, but you can probably find it on his thread.

As for the performance, I thought the picture was one of the best I have seen. I was looking for blurring and artifacts, but I didn't see any. He says he is getting huge ANSI, but I am not so sure. I would love to see the measurements. There is some debate whether going beyond a certain ANSI number matters. Without an A/B, I can't say. His room did have the light colored chairs and I did see some reflections coming from the walls and ceiling. I am not sure if it matters as there was excellent detail. He told me he was getting around 19 ft/lmbs. I must say brightness is addicting and I do believe it masks the issue of relatively low on/off. Out of probably the dozen clips I watched, only "2001" was were I really missed on/off. Even in this movie, I could see where most would be happy with the performance but not a CRTer.Smile Peter swears ANSI is more important than on/off, but I think they both have their place. If this thing had 100k to 1 on/off, then it would have almost no weaknesses. Of course, it better for the price.Smile

On the audio side, I am with Curt. The Dynaudios were nice, but at what cost. Peter has always loved these speakers. I would probably have went with Jon Marsh's Modula Neos at $500 a pop. For the sub, I would have went IB with the TRW filling in the very bottom. With good Belden cable, the whole install could have been less than $20k. To go the ultimate route, I might have gotten Mark Seaton or the like to design a custom audio solution.

edit - One thing I want to add is that seeing this pj was great, but I would love to A/B it. I was thinking that a blend might be a good option to compete with this setup. With the size of the screen (15 ft?), I don't think a blend could match the brightness. It would be interesting if it could match or beat it in overall presentation though. Considering the cost of the Barco, it would be possible to try a Torus and the accompanying complexity that goes along with it.

I agree that his website sucks just like Jeremy's Kipnis Studio website. Both of these guys are one man gangs and my guess is that to get the jobs they are going after they aren't getting them off the web. My competitors websites are worse than mine, but they are better bullsh.... I mean salesman than me.
