Well, I have to say THANKS ATHANASIOS!!!!!!!

On your recommendation, I got a BH100. These are available at quite reasonable prices now. I'm amazed at the video quality of this puppy. Beautiful 1080p/24 output! The picutre is much cleaner than my HD-A1 on my HD DVDs. The difference in Transformers was amazing. In the HD-A1, it had a lot of noise in the picture. With BH100 the picture is every bit as sharp and there is less noise!

Unless something goes terribly wrong, I love this thing. Great recommendation--thanks again! Very Happy Thumbs Up

Wow Dave, I have not seen you this excited about anything. It must be great! Very Happy

What's not to love? Mr. Green

Blu Ray player for $280 for a refurbished unit with a 90 day warranty. Does every audio format but lossless DTS (does do Dolby TrueHD) out the the analog outs. Has a super clean 1080p/24 output. Plays BDs at least as well as the PS3 that costs over 33% more (in fact, I'm going to try to get a PS3 in the house to compare it to--all the reviews [which I researched after the recommendation] raved about the video quality of this player and from the PS3 output I've seen I would not be surprised if this beat it in video quality).

And on top of all that (which is a compelling argument for it as a BD only player), it plays my HD DVDs better (and with 1080p/24 output) than my HD-A1, so I don't have to keep it in the rack!

I always get excited about unexpected surprises! Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

Congrats.

Too bad about the DTS Hd not being in there. I'll hope they add that in FW. Every since I upgraded to a HDMI AVR I've been loving the various formats including DTS MA.

(Does it bitstream it though? If It does that then you will have it whenever you get a newer AVR if ever. My AVR was pretty nice but was so old it was Dolby Digital only no DTS even from DVD except for the analog inputs of course.)

According to this site (which could be wrong or incoplete...)

http://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?id=21&show=specs

It can do DTS HD just not DTS MA.

Anyway,... enjoy.

I think that site is wrong or confused. The BH200 will do HTS HD and send it out HDMI. I don't have a BD DTS HD disc to try yet though to verify it myself. SC's site on page 1 seems to be up to date as it shows on board of TrueHD which came with the last firmware 2.5 months ago--I would think if it also did DTS HD, they would have updated it.

Thanks. I hope they do. Worst case, they do it with firmware and do it only via HDMI for when I upgrade the AVR. But, I'll probably go to a BH300 by then! Frankly, I'm pretty happy I got this level of quality and features for the price. I was very bummed about "having" to go with a PS3. The fact that I didn't, plus saved money, got BD video quality that is at least as good as the PS3 (I'm dying to do a shootout because I think it is better from what I've seen Smile), got analog outs for DD+ and TrueHD, AND got better playback of HD DVDs than my HD DVD player all adds up to icing on top. Mr. Green

the one thing i wish it had was 480i out to the hdmi jack, it only outputs it to the component that way. maybe they will put a firmware update for that but not many customers asked for it. That is its only weakness as far as i can tell so far, I use a SDI moded Denon1600 for my SD DVD's, the LG cant touch that.

SD DVD????? I remember those, they are packed away with my vinyl, open reel, 8-tracks, cassette, Beta-max, VHS & Laser-disks. Smile

To be honest I did pop in the original SD-DVD copy of TFE the other day, I could not believe how soft it looked.

I found if i run it at 960p it actually isnt that bad out of the lumagen, SDI is a lot better than a regular component out or hdmi, unless the hdmi does 480i so your processor does all the work.

I have an Oppo 970 (I was a beta tester for them) and it does 480i HDMI very well. I also think that SD DVD scaled to 720 looks better than any higher resolution. If the SD DVD is a VERY good transfer, it can look quite good.

But, like others, I try to avoid SD when I can. I only watch it now when it is a kids movie I've not been able to record to D-VHS in HD or something we just love that has also not yet been available in HD.

But, since those numbers are declining, if the LG outputting 480p to the Lumagen is pretty close to the Oppo outputting 480i, I'm removing the Oppo from the set up as my SD DVD watching is definately going down. Unfortunately, it appears that it will be quite some time before my local video rental stores stock a large number of HD discs. Sad

This is a post that I've been kinda looking forwards to for some while. I'm going to agree with Dave on HDM for the first time in a couple of years.

Blu's been my colour all along, but I couldn't help notice the recent price of HD DVD HW & SW, and there's a groundswell in appreciation for the LG (and Samsung) multi-players that seems to have overturned the inititial, universal derision. I just imported a BH200 from the US to the UK, and did all the firmware and region code mods, which are especially valuable for someone with lots of Region 2 DVDs and Region A BDs.

And guess what - Athanasios and Dave are right. This player does DVDs, BDs & HDs as well as pretty much ANY other player, and apart from DTS MA decoding, it looks like all the functionality is there as well. I hadn't even heard of QDEO processing before reading up about this, but its the real deal, and seems to do more with noise reduction than other solutions. Mine cost $450, which is less that I paid for ANY other player, yet it out-performs them all, and is pretty quick, quiet and reliable as well.

Of course, I've been buying HD DVDs like they are going out of fashion - er - which they are I suppose. Nomatter, they do the job, and there's a huge pot of great titles selling for less than DVDs in many cases. I've even been replacing BDs with HDs in my collection. Never thought I'd see the day, but why have $20 tied up on a title when $10 is enough? This is the easiest no-brainer I can recall. The wife is happy because the box count goes down, we can get discs from anywhere, and I can play with the USB & network functionality to my hearts content. I have two left thumbs for gaming, so the otherwise very logical PS3 holds hardly any other advantages, with the LG covering almost (for now) all the audio bases.

And what was the first HD DVD that this low-brow videophile played - Transformers of course!

Glorious.

Nick, I just found another bonus with my BH100. Using the EDID of my Lumagen, I can force the BH100 to output 480i over HDMI on DVDs. Even better, it auto-switches resolutions--DVD 480i, HD DVD and BD 1080p/24. How cool is THAT? Smile Smile Smile

Hey, don't get all excited there big boy. Wink

I'm still not happy. Consumers got screwed with blu winning. Region codes, slower adoption, more expensive players, more expensive media. No, this win was not good for any consumer.

But Dave the beauty of the BH100(if its an early Build date later dates have not been confirmed yet) is that is BD region Free right out of the BOX !!!!!! No hack needed, you only need to do the SD DVD hack with the DVD disc on the AVSForum BH200 Thread.

I'm Glad That you have discovered How great this player is as I have known since december of 2006. If any one else can find this player or the BH200(no Analog outs) Get it!!! I have seen many players and this beats most of them out their.

Have you tried 1440X960P? I used to like 720P also until I installed SDI in my Panasonic DVD player and fed it to a SDI equiped scaler. The Panny has since died but I saved the SDI hardware. Some day I hope to find a good deal on a Sony 777ES 400 disk player and slap the SDI mod in it. That will give me a place to store my 300+ collection of SD DVD's

Don't quite understand - is that a BIG shelf FULL of blu-ray discs - or an EVEN bigger projector?

I'm without a PJ at the moment Sad , but my HD DVD collection is growing rapidly - I bought twenty-odd last night Smile . Blu-rays are starting to seem expensive now...
