It seems that not all PS3 games support 1080P play. I've been poking around but haven't actually seen any that say they support 1080P. I'm not a gamer but would like a game or two that I could use to show off how good PS3 looks on a crt pj at 1080P. Any suggestions?

The publisher of GTA4 said he was disappointed in the end product because of limitations of the hardware. Of course, is GTA a meter worth gaging?

My suggestion: get a pimped out HTPC and play some PC games in high resolution.

If you want the ultimate in game graphics you have to go with a PC. I have GTA4 for the PS3 and the graphics aren't overly impressive. I can easily see pixel aliasing. The PS3 is what, pushing 2 years old? I'll be the first to admit, however, that I'd rather have less than cutting edge graphics and a smooth frame rate than the opposite.

The PC version of GTA4, which I expect to be due out in 6 months or so, will blow the console version out of the water when you consider that you can get the latest and greatest video hardware and jack the resolution up. This was the case with Vice City and San Andreas on the consoles vs. the PC. You cannot blame the consoles. They are stuck with the hardware the come out with, at least the way they are designed right now. With a PC you have extensive upgrade options... and you pay a premium for it too!

Exactly. You can get the latest and greatest video cards that'll get you that hot-sh*t performance to blow away the console, but it'll cost you almost as MUCH as the console - just for the video card. If you're not after cutting-edge, the consoles offer an excellent value and require little to no screwing around to use it - something which can NOT be said of the PC.

I was going to say exactly that. I've been at both ends of the spectrum. Years ago I was a rabid gamer and spent way too much money on PC upgrades just to be able to play the latest and greatest video games on the PC at framerates that made me happy. It was typical that to run things correctly you need to spend as equivalent amount of money as a gaming console costs about every 6-8 months for a new video card just to keep the latest and greatest PC games running.

They were better but they certainly weren't a better value.

Now I have a PS3 and only play a small handfull of games, but still keep tabs on PCs. Some interest things out there for PC but to run them right (Crysis anyone?) you need a $400-500 video card (not to mention the rest of the PC). As much as the entire PS3!

Kal

Have to agree with Kal here. What one spends on getting the top of the line video graphics in a game requires a rather expensive video card. And I doubt someone is going to justify plugging that string o pearls onto a pig of a PC. Of course, I have no idea what games are like on the PS3, because i am too busy playing 360 games.

Same thing for the Xbox 360. All fleecing of consumers.

Yes, very much so.

To recap, you can play Call of Duty 4 on two year old hardware at 600p on a PS3 or Xbox 360, or you can play it on cutting edge PC hardware at true 1080p. Yes, you will pay a premium for the eye candy, but if you own a 9" CRT projector you just might be used to paying a premium for this sick hobby.

I started this thread out of interest. I'm not a gamer and after trying my first PS3 games on a giant screen, will never be.
Evidently I'm one of those poor saps that get's motion sickness from playing this $hit on a giant screen. I played for 30 minutes and was sick for 3 hours (cold sweat's and hurling). Rolling Eyes

Descent was amazing. Truly capable of inducing vertigo; coming into a huge room upside down or sideways - playing with the "auto level" off, like real men should of course - was really surprising.

A friend of mine had a nice set of 3d LCD goggles with head tracking for Descent. Talk about immersive! The short focal length it forced your eyes into gave me a headache, though. Kind of like crossing your eyes for 15 minutes.

On topic, Grand Turismo 5 on the PS3 is pretty impressive.

G'Day Gentlemen (& Ladies - wouldn't want to start off with sexual stereotyping!). I've been playing with CRTs for the past 15 years or so and have recently been trying to get a pair of 3D systems up and running, primarily for gaming (I have a 12-year-old son that I solo parent a little more than 50% of the time, and we've spent an hour or two a day for the past decade gaming on PCs & XBoxs). I've been using LCD glasses from eDimensional, and I'm just wondering if any of you have any personal experience with these or similar devices? Sorry for the long intro, and thanks to anyone that takes the time to respond.
