G'day,
I've recently got a Barco 701 and after many hours, I've been able to get the alignment/convergence done with a 576p source using a setup DVD. So I thought "GREAT". Then I thought I'd try the new HD Set Top Box I bought.... we'll dang it, it appears I need to do the whole thing again (cause the source is now 1080i). But how can one do a convergence if there is no test pattern on a STB? Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with the programming where you are but in my cable market there are a few stations that periodically broadcast test patterns or home theater setup programs. These typically come on at odd hours of the night or morning and last anywhere from a few minutes up to a half hour. I have recorded a few of these onto my HD DVR for just this purpose. I get a station called HDNet and Mojo (formerly INHD) and both of those have these available. I would check out your HD stations programming guide and look for them there. The ones I recorded have brightness and contrast setup, convergence pattern with the circles in the corners and middle and color adjustment patterns. Of course, make sure your set top box is set to output 1080i only, force it to this resolution only by de-selecting all other choices. Then just find some patterns. You might call your provider and ask about this as well.

Also, copy your converged memory block to the 1080i block as the starting point to make the set up quicker.

Not doubting you Dave but I just think I recall being told not to do this because of one signal being progressive and one interlaced. Would trying to build on the 576p signal not cause more work than just starting over?

Copying will more often than not get you closer than starting from defaults. For instance, you <color> gain and bias settings from a previous block are more likely to be correct for your screen and your particular CRT than the defaults. The geometry, etc, will also likely be closer. The Barco already does a "best guess" based upon other blocks, so you actually get sort of a copy anyway. I'm just saying to copy as a starting point, not an ending point.
