Ok, the last few days I've been having a weird problem with my Marquee 8500. I've noticed that when I turn it on, it takes bit longer for the screen to initialize and takes a second or two longer coming into focus. Then when it finally does, I can see a horizontal red flickering all up and down the screen that lasts for 10-15 seconds at least. Then lets say for instance that I'll go into Halo 3 on my Xbox 360 and while the game is loading a new menu or something, my screen with randomly go black and then after a few seconds come back on and take a few seconds to slowly focus and I'll see the red issue again. Seems like its gets worse every day too, sometimes it will happen several times in a row during gameplay. I'm running my 360 through a Crescendo to my Marquee. This hasn't happened before and I'm worried that she's dying on me. Any clues? Thanks

Mike

This seems like a recent problem with the Marquee, It could be one of a few problems, like one of the boards not being seated properly, or the cips in the CLM needing to be pushed it to make better contact or what I think it may be as this has been solved by a few people recently, there is a trim pot on the VNB ( Video neck board) that controls the cut off to the crt, it get corosuon on it with age and in more humid enviroments, its recomended to carefully remove the silicon covering it and then turning the trip pot a few time back and forth to free up any oxidation. keep it in the same position so you dont change any factory settings.

you can cover it with silicon again if you want.

But first try to reseat each board it might be that, especially if its mounted to your ceiling.

The first thing I did was take the focus boards out and clean them with some contact cleaner from Radio Shack but it didn't help. The other stuff you suggested, I would need some sort of guide to do those.

Ok First in between the green and blue tube is the HDM(Horizontal Deflection Module) Remove it remebering how the connected wires are orientated as they will change the orientation on the screen of the image if switched around. Remove the board clean the contacts as you did with the focus board especially the connector to the mother board. Also there is a smaller daughter board on it remove and clean those as well. replace and test.

Now the CLM Control logic Module) this is the board on the lower left of the back of the projector with the diagnostic lights. it pulls out and has no connecting wires. there are two board connected to this if you have the astigmator board, remove both boards and now press down on all the chips on the three boards that are in carriers(chip sockets) this will make sure they have a good contact. rplace the two boards and replace the CLM and test again.

Now for the neck board, since you said its red horizontal lines i would only do the red VNB. Remove the VNB from the tube neck. look at the marquee tear down document for pics on how to remove and reinstall. On the top left corner there will be a glob of silicon, remove it carefully and under it will be a trim pot. turn it back and forth a few times and put it back in the same posistion. put the board back in remembering to make sure the G2(white wire) goest to the top pin of the two on the tube pins that are exposed, the other pins are connected onto the VNB leaving only two exposed for the white pin to connect to. test again.

if all that doesnt help try two last things pulling the power supplies on the front and just rteseating them a few times incase they have some oxidation on their contacts.

Otherwise it could be a HVPS gone bad.

Did you put the two boards, the DPB and stig waveform board back correctly on the CLM all pins lined up on the connectors? Check to see if any error lights are on in the back.

There are no error lights and I'm sure I put the 2 boards back on correctly... I don't know how else they could even fit. Before whenever I would turn the projector on, after a few seconds of warmup the tubes would give off this crackling sound which I presume is static discharge. They're not doing that anymore, whatever that means.

Hmmm sounds like your not getting the power from the HVPS. that Crackling is the power supply feeding the tubes. besides the Focus board and the CLM did you remove anything else before the CLM. I'm wondering if that board is causing a problem.

I don't recall removing anything else, no. I did the focus board and the daughter board and tested...realized I put the connectors on wrong and my image was reversed (doh!) so I took it back out and corrected it and then moved on to the CLM. It hasn't worked since and I can't figure out what I did wrong.

When you put the connectors back on the HDM did you test it afterwards? If not re-check all the connectors to the HDM. I always check and test then test one more time before i move to the next trouble shooting step, sometimes you have to go back again just in case.

I have pulled out the HDM and rechecked the connectors a couple of times. Everything seems to be secured in the right place but who knows...

Something must not be connected right to not allow the HVPS to come on. Unless it was going and finaly went...?

you need to try another CLM and HVPS possibly. or send curt the CLM for testing, or TIm martin.

Just did some reading on AVS and it sounds like there may be something wrong with my LVPS. I cleaned out the contacts on both the LVPS and HVPS but it didn't help. I don't know how to tell if I've blown a fuse in the LVPS. I do remember hearing a strange click or pop come out of the projector the other day but it didn't die until last night.

Curt just suggested that it was my HVPS instead of the LVPS. He offered to test and repair the HVPS and HDM for me but it would cost me more than I have invested in the whole unit!! There has to be something else I can do here...

You have toi open it up and look at the fuses, there is one you can see and i think one under the small metal box where the plug goes in, but if that one blew nothing would go an al all.

If you heard something pop it could be anything, caps make that sound when they blow resistors just make lots of smoke. did you smell anything lately during all this began.

the only thing you could do is if you have someone near you with a marquee that can test yours or you can test their,s. and the other boards. With these projectors its always good to buy a spare for this exact situation, even if it has spent tubes.
