3D computer games can split the image if you have an Nvidia video card (or two). Others maybe but Nvidia for sure. Nvidia has been supporting stereo 3d for a while. You will need to download the stereo drivers from their website. You might need a hardware splitter otherwise. Its the same process for helmet mounted displays. You can use any resolution your display can handle.

If a movie is your source material it must be filmed in stereo to get a true stereo effect. The effect can be simulated but only momentarily during high action scenes and is not worth the effort to set up in my opinion. However, stereo flight simulation or first person shooters in true stereo 3D are way cool.
