|
|
Occasionally when I turn on my 8500 the green tube remains dark. I hit color-8 and it comes right on.
Should I be concerned?
EDIT: Well, let me rephrase that. Of course I am concerned, this isn't normal and I am going to need to figure out what the problem is and fix it. Advice here is welcome.
What I mean to ask is, should I be panicking? Is this a sign of impending and catastrophic doom?

Sounds like it may be a simple connection issue. Try reseating the neck board, and any connecting wires. Also reseat the HV lead in the splitter. If this doesn't fix it, I have no idea, but my general electronic knowledge says there is a very slight possibility of bad caps somewhere, but not a likely cause (much too easy to be the problem

I think there is a circuit on the neck board that shuts off the g2 to the tube during input switching and frequency changes and soforth if i remeber correctly. it could be something with that were it is keeping the G2 down untill a signal is detected. I think i read something like that in the service manual...any tech know this for sure.? I'll look trough again and post back.

I use a PC connected to the PJ through a moome card, and the computer is always on, so there is signal applied when I power up.

Yeah, I am going to tear it down, re-seat all the IC's and clean all the contacts with this pricey-ass stuff that Curt has recommended to me.

Caig cleaner doenst last long especially when trying to spray it is small parts pins. I spray some into a small cap of a soda bottle and use a small brush to apply it, last longer this way. I read the service manual and what i was reffering to is the spotkill circiut. Even with a source connected it shuts down the power to the tubes in between signal changes, probably not it and some dirty contacts as curt suggested. If it stilla cts up after do the chips on the CLM too.

I got a can of the solvent spray, a package of the 100% wipes, and a small assortment of swabs. I figure with that array I should be able to be reasonably frugal with it. I probably should have gotten one of the bottles with a brush as well, but the darned stuff really is expensive.
I'm planning to just do every board in the projector at once. I wasn't planning to pull the chips to clean them, though, just seat them and then clean all the edge connectors on the boards and all the connectors on the point-to-point stuff.
Pulling and replacing all those old IC's without damaging something seemed like it might be trouble. Are you recommending it?

I do have a similar problem on my marquee 8k 1995 with small board at the back.
If you look right at the green tube like me do you see a dim image moving?
My tube went down time to time and now remain downs. Those tubes was in fair shape. The other two are up and running as before. the green one is kind of trying but fail at start-up. any ideas?

Ok it could be the cut off trim pot on the neck board being corroded . Its under some silicone or epoxy. you need to carefull remove it and turn the trim pot a few times to loosen any corrosion. This is in the mike parker thread from
CURT PALME:
| Quote: | | I know the shutoff problem. That is most likely a slight corrosion on the trimpot that sets the cutoff. I've had that twice on neckboards. THe trimpot is under a blob of silicone so that you can't see it. Carefully chip away at the silicone to expose the pot, and rotate slightly. I'll bet the problem will go away. |

VDOfreak,
Is that the 8000 you got from me? If so the first thing I would check would be the mini RCA cables that go from the VIM to the VNB's, I had a little trouble with these years ago and had to resolder the connections on the VIM, however I never did anything with the connections of the neckboards, try swapping the red and green neckboards and see if that fixes the problem. It may also be a good idea to reseat the boards.

Ok here are two pics from My Modification Thread
New board
This is the one curt mentions R86 top left blob( bottom left in picture)
Old Board
This is bottom left blob I think its R39(Bottom Right in picture) but there is too much glue to see
for sure.
remember the location of the trim pot after you turn it back and forth so it goes to the same position .

Thanks all, wow, you help me here! Gonna work on this by the end of the week.
Good answers bring more Questions, yet little ones
Say Zebu, what are actually the modif. again? excepted the glicol of curse .
Also how come it's not fully scanning by the right (or both side using phase menu) at many (mostly higher than 1024...) resolutions and refresh rates?
It's the same if i use my old second RGB board or the main that came with it. Also with or without the HDfurry.
If i remember my old main RGB board don't work right in this unit...
BTW, Curt, your cat crack me up!
