Lossless is NOT snake oil.
That doesn't mean you can't be very happy with a $30 Chaintech AV710 and optical spdif out.

It is with most sound cards. There's reasons you never see a sound card with spdif/toslink advertised as TrueHD/lossless/etc.
1. The software typically does the decoding.
2. SPDIF/Toslink only have the bandwidth for 2 uncompressed channels over PCM, so no TrueHD w/o some transcoding.
Think of your sound card as an amp that doesn't really do a whole lot of "processing". Now, it is very flexible, especially if you have an older stereo that isn't 7.1. You can use the analog outs, pump them through one or more amps, and have a 7.1 system off of spare unused junk.

Amp probably isn't the best term since you don't amplify it. Maybe processor that doesn't decode is a better way to describe it.
