Hi all,

I live in an apartement, and could not really use a state of the art surround speaker system blown to full watts without seriously disturbing the neighbours (like in the Bob Marley song....)

So, I looked into what was possible to do with headphones and found the JVC SU DH-1 surround adapter. Ordered it from Audiocubes, about 110 USD with shipping. Another 38 USD for swedish duty and VAT... It arrived the other day and I set it up. It uses Dolby headphone system to simulate 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS with two channels from common headphones.

First impressions are that the soundstage is impressive ! The sound does actually seem to appear from around the room instead of inside the head as with common stereo headphone listening. It is not so clearly defined however, it is hard to pinpoint exact location of sounds. It is not real surround sound, but close enough. I have only some very simple Koss PortaPro headphones, but the soundstage and quality could probably be very much improved with good headphones like the Sennheiser HD650.

Just my 2c..

Something i thought of doing was taking or building a cockpit style arcade machine cabinet. putting a screen in there. and mounting a good bookcase speaker / Computer speaker surround system inside it. If the chair is comfy it would make a nice solo theater.
my wife vetoed the idea due to space.
