Hi Frank
Check out this thread, especially the last few pages. Key improvements I'm seeing due to BA board mods are in resolution, saturation, black level, and they're very obvious. Still need to get the set recalibrated but I'll wait until I move again to do this. The picture looks so good as is.

Is there an identifier on the IC421 which indicates whether it's from the good or bad batch?

We used to think there was, there's a looong thread here somewhere about it that I started a couple of years ago.
The general consensus was that the chip usually failed at the 1000-1500 hour mark, but I recently had a couple of bad ones at 3500 and 5000 hours, so that theory is toast more or less.

Look on IC421. If it has lot number 003a01e than it is one that may fail. Any other lot number has not failed so far ever.

I don't think there's a given time frame at this point. I've had quite a few of the 'suspect' chips be just fine. I try to keep a good Ya board here, as does Craig, to keep our customers running, but while it does seem that the failures occur with one run of chip, I don't think that every chip in that run was affected.

Exactly.

Last year I serviced one of my G90 clients' with 640 hours on it and the problem was with IC421 (003a01e). A few years back I serviced a clients' G90 with 6400 hours and it wound up being the 003a01e lot IC421. Both projectors were original owner machines too. Those were the lowest and highest hours IC421s I have seen fail.

Someone asked me to check my IC421 lot number...
836A01E and (knock wood) no issues even after 18,000+ hours

Well after about 6.5 years I had to copy and change my current Dallas chip (previously copied and changed it in March 2008) onto a new one as the battery started showing signs of weakening. So it really did not last 10 years.

All is back and running well now.

Hello Franck and all,

A big thanks for your precious tutorial!

I possess a G90 Sony, I want to change the Dallas chip.

I bought a EPROM programmer and compatibles chips (M48Z128Y-120PM1)
Being not at all a regular to this genre of equipment, I need advice, already how to install correctly the programmer on my PC, connection Parallel port and USB, program etc....

On the procedure he write about a small circular mark to identify the brooch 1 on the chip of origin, but how identify it on the programmer and on the new chip because there is no number?
I do not want to make a mistake about direction.

Thank you in advance for your help Wink

I have now been through the Dallas chip replacement process with two G90s.

Here is the best way to do it.

Get the chip here:
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Maxim-Integrated/DS1245Y-120+/?qs=0Y9aZN%252bMVCVf6XAzbZp3eg%3D%3D\

DO NOT BUY ONE OFF EBAY. YOU WILL PROBABLY GET A CHINESE FAKE THAT WILL FAIL IN THREE MONTHS.

Send the new chip along with your old chip to Craig Rounds. He will copy the data from the old chip over to the new one,
and send them both back to you.

He will charge a nominal and very reasonable fee for this service.

Alternatively Craig can also provide the new chip for you, but you would still be advised to send him your old one for copying.

Hi

The chip programmer software should identify which spot is for chip 1. It has been a while since I programmed my last chip so I am just going from memory. From memory I think I found out spot 1 on the programmer from the programmers software.

See attached picture for where the black circle is. It is a bit hard to see so you may have to turn up your computer brightness to see it. Hopefully that helps you.

Thank you for informations.

I have already bought two chips here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1piece-M48Z128Y-120PM1-1Mbit-128Kbx8-ZEROPOWER-SRAM-DIP32-DS1245-NEW-/271833613421?hash=item3f4a8bc46d:g:z5UAAOSwrklVJocS

I have just found it on the same site.
http://www.mouser.fr/ProductDetail/STMicroelectronics/M48Z128Y-120PM1/?qs=lgDiYRnMSka646nAyZ46yw==
It's old chip, Maybe that the battery has no more the same capacities...
Operating Supply Current is 105mA instead of 85mA.

I am not going to take risk, I think that I am going to order the one that you recommend me.

On your picture, I see very well the black circle top left.

On the chip which I possess, this black circle is the equivalent?

Thank you again.

Fake counterfeit chips.

Order this chip, not the STI. This is the cheapest Dallas version available right now that is legitimate.

AS Craig said, do not use those eBay chips. Counterfeit for sure.

If the counterfeits work at all, expect their battery to go dead in a matter of months. Those chips draw very high current compared to the authentic chip and will drain down their battery very quickly.

This is not the place to be cheaping out. Get the real deal from a real supplier, not an ebayer selling chinocrap.

I have dissected the eBay chips. They use both an inferior batter and a memory chip that uses more power than the real Dallas chips. The counterfeits also have the battery engaged before programming so the chip is using power from the time of production.
