How did it go with the banding mod.? Is it working, or did you run into problems.?

I bought some of those already drags, never used them yet.

Kurt, I
I still need to find a better solution for the board mounting. I might redo it and move all of that convergence
circuit to another board . TSE sent me a pic of it that way and will work on it come winter time.

the way I have it now does work but the board pops off U44. So I want to redo the board with U44 and U44X on the same board. But the difficult part is lining up the headers and making the daughter board match. if I had the exact fils for the CLM's layout
then it be a pice of cake. But you have to try to measure the chips, solder pads, etc and line them up on two sides of the PCB. not easy to do. I made three sets of PCB's all with slightly different layouts of x,y coordinates so in case one was off the other might fit. i was close with one set I used but not perfect. So it have to be redone again.

you could find a machine shop with a CMM or a dedicated inspection facility to plot it for you but it could be pricey

Just did a cap change on my CVA and Vdm with wet tantalums as
Chris Stevens did on the Accurate Imaging PJ's.

I used 120f 50volt wet tants on the CVA and those and 560f 30volt ones on the VDM.
I did not do the Astig board, just regular panasonic Fm series caps there.

I have to say doing a side by side comparison the wet tant rear heat sink
board PJ is more stable and now there is less noise in the image. Also the
rear heat sink is 4.4 C cooler using a IR thermometer after about 40 minutes of my testing.

What is weird on these PJ was that neither had Thermal Paste on the rear heat sinks!!! And these were new never used. I did the one long time ago when I had to repair a bad astig board and it warmed up much faster.
Now the one with the wet tants warms up a little faster. Hmm, cooler gets to warm up temp faster, its logical Wink.

I also changed out all the TL084's with TLE2074's on the Vdm and used soft recovery diodes
on all board and changed the Resistors on the CVA and the VDM. I did use an
OsCon on the one dad compared to a wet want as I like the filtering of the OsCons .
They were the only cap to work on the CMM noise issue I had when I first got the PJ's.

How durable are these these caps? Just because I see C41 was made in 1985...

the 120f might have some bad ones. I'll have to run the PJ for some time to find out.

I bet I might get one or two that are bad out of the ones installed. But at least don't go pop they slowly
loose it Wink

Justin did his CVA and out of the 30 , he had 2 or 3 go bad.

Well a new update. Gjaky was right. One 120uf cap on the power rail shorted on the Horizontal red channel amp of the CVA
and blew a hole in the PCB. But with a large amount of time and a use of a second brain, thanks Mac,
I was able to repair the board and have Red H back. I used the scope and found it was the RHC-FDBK signal.

Here is the bad signal.

I removed every single transistor and they all measured fine. I replaced the shorted cap before that and
still could not figure it out. What it came down to , after Mac and I began to start over on the diagnostics again, were the four 2 ohm resistors on the feedback line that go to GND.
Two were reading 2.2kohms !! I looked at that at the very beginning but misread the DMM, I missed the little k after the 2.2 Doh!!!!

So I replaced those and got the Red H convergence back. But the signal was still shaky for all channels and I want to try some film by pass caps for the main +/- 24 volt power rail caps.
The originals are Multi layer ceramics I believe. Those usually work well
but those who have ever heard "singing caps" on their Vdm or CVA it could be those.
So I have a bunch of 100nf film caps( Wima) to put in as replacements.

Here are the scope pics. The one that looks double is due the shakiness of the signal.

Here is the scope pic with all the film caps replaced, 12 in all.

And here is the board with all film 100nf bypass caps for the power rails.

The blue caps are ERO 1835( not sure) 4.7nf, I had those lying around too so I used them.

Ok so these caps filter the high frequency noise from the powerrail. The ceramic sound like little mosquitos Very Happy

I don't think they filtered any better if you look at the trace, they look about the same thickness but now they are more stable. The scope trace was more stable after the change. I also scoped with only one channel but all GND's are the same for all channels so the trace was still unstable until all 12 were replaced.

Before I added the Film by pass caps the image was more stable. But it was so short lived
I was not able to watch anything. I am going to allow this board to run on my test bed for
some hours before I put it back in my Theater unit. The VDm seems to be ok. I may also now
add film caps in the by pass locations for that as well.

I know that wet tants hold there stated value better over heat
changes etc. This is why they are used in the space program
and sensitive military uses. But you want to try to use Military spec
parts. Chris did do a lot of visual and then scoping of the differences made.

He explained to me he would change a few caps and look for a difference in image
either bad or good and then scope it to find out why there was a change when he changed those parts.

He was very thorough from what I gather from our conversations.

He used 4 125uf 100vlot wets in series on the HVPS that he says really helped
regulate the HVPS. But he thinks more can be done in that area but he is a bit crazy, he wants to use crazy
large caps for the HV leads on each tube. Shocked if you got zapped by that you would be dead for sure.

This is interesting 4x 125uF capacitor in series worth 31uF with 4x ESR of a single capacitor. As you may know capacitors with higher voltage rating usualy have lower ESR not higher, so I doubt it would be much better than a single 400V 33uF plain electrolytic cap. Instead 30pcs. 1uF 400V film caps in parallel would be something... Thumbs Up

Good point!!!

I am asking him in an email about the larger ESR and possible voltage drop it create.

Not sure if the reserver power that this creates would over come the negatives mentioned above.

He did agree that the new style film caps are much smaller and might work better than the wet tants in series from past emails .

But never use an Electrolytic there. I wouldn't trust it over a similar film cap like the Clarity caps I put in Justins.

Ok I tried to capture the grid moving on the left stock PJ with video but you all know how hard that is to capture video with video ! lol

But any how in person it is easier to see.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C8OaVaZPqs&feature=youtu.be

I'll try agin tomorrow its late now and I need to sleep.

Just one question. After upgrading caps and resistors is it possible to eliminate all long term drift? I mean the drift that goes on after 1/2 an houre.

My 9500 still drifts a littlebit after 2 hours. I have newer vdc boards for the most but newer still means they are 10 years old.

Does it take special cooling of the heatsinc to get the 9500 completely stable?
