I just hooked up my RTC2200 and tried playing with the black level control, which did nothing.
The downloaded user's guide said that if your monitor is AC coupled, then nothing will happen.

Nothing happened.

I've got an Ampro 4600. I've tried changing from Back Porch Clamp to Sync-Tip Clamp but it
doesn't make any difference.

Is the gamma control labeled BLKLVL? Will it work on an Ampro. Am I not adjusting the right
control?

Thanks,
John

The gamma control is indeed the BLKLVL pot. (Note to Kim: Maybe re-label it as "GAMMA" in future boxes?)

It's a multi-turn pot, 25 turns IIRC. You have to turn it 10-15 times before anything happens. I can't remember which way is which but I think the manual explains it. I turned mine all the way down by turning it 25 times or so, and then going up around 11 turns gave the best results for me.

John,

Are you sure that you have the RTC2200, only the RTC2000 (the one without gamma) mentions that thing about the AC-coupling.

Beun, You were correct. I don't know how I brought up a copy of the RTC2000 but it does mention AC-coupling and nothing on gamma.

Kal, At first the BLKLVL pot would only make a quarter turn. But after your information, I just applied more pressure and it started to rotate for many turns. Mid-point, as you said, seems to be about right. Raising the gamma makes the Ampro sing! Lowered the black level for
true CRT blacks but with black-level detail that increased gamma gives.

The final tweak!

It's nice isn't it? Once you've lived with it for while, turn it off again. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it! Smile

The black level pot on my 2200 turns and turns and turns I counted up to 40 turns before I got nervous and stopped. It does not click and I don't see any change in the picture.

The click is very subtle and you will only really see something if your blacklevel is setup right.
