Nothing against Toshiba. This is typical. Companies will deny everything up until the minute before the 'official' press release is announced.

It's all about clearing out those warehouses jammed full of product and getting back as much as possible before throwing in the towel. However if Tosh ran production the way they ran their campaign...they're f*ck***. They'll have no choice but to damn near give the things away or wait for the here and there purchases to deplete the inventory....which could take quite some time. I don't think it will be the latter. Warehouse floorspace is too valuable to 'archive' a dead product.
That said, has anybody happened to notice the mass hysteria to sell off HDDVD hardware on ebay and Craigslist? Even here on this site there have been some For Sales that oozed desperation. I don't know why...the door was left open and the horse is loooooong gone. Enjoy your short lived victory while you can Sony. You're about to get your collective asses handed to you.
EDIT:Oh...and Microsoft???...you can come out of hiding now...ya cowardly thumbdicked *******.

Hey, I resemble that remark!! I'd been intending all week (since well before everything hit the fan) to list my player but didn't get around to it -- when I finally did, all hell had broken loose. Great timing. Just like I could have sold my 5 freebie disks for 2x more if I'd sold them back in December or January, but I didn't *get* 'em until about 10 days ago. Ohwell, I've never been known for having good timing on things like this....

No sh*t!!! For supposed HD DVD supporters, there's been nothing but thunderous silence from Redmond. Of course, last time a studio jumped TO HD DVD, Microsot go accused of paying what, $50 mil to get them to do it? Yeah, cause there's no legitimate reason a studio might have wanted to go over to HD DVD.
Man, the more I think about all this, the more it pisses me off.
With all the bull**** rumors that flew, it wouldn't surprise me if nobody from Toshiba's camp had ever uttered a word about them throwing in the towel, but instead it was just another dirty rumor started by the likes of that Digital Bits dillhole.
Lies, deceit, mis-information campaigns, mis-steps, hired guns, uninformed supporters and detractors... payoffs and corruption. Holy sh*t, this whole thing was more like a bad presidential election than a consumer electronics format war!!!
Gag...

No offense meant man. Your story is different. I'm talking about people (not so much here but at the hundreds of blogs I've stumbled across where EVERYBODY is a pro) who didn't know enough to know they didn't know in the FIRST place; and were just following the masses when they got into HDDVD. And who are now panicking and racing to jump into the winners circle. Those people piss me off like there's no tomorrow only because there's more impulse buyers than informed consumers...and they're rewarded with a majority vote by proxy.
I'll concede that Sony's marketing engine was cranking out 1000 ft/lbs of torque at idle and Toshiba lost their keys...but we informed people know which technology was truly superior; and most importantly, which one out of the box ready to be a good trouble free runner for the foreseeable future.
It's the ones who just 'happened' into BD as their first HDM player and are bragging that pisses me off the most. Victory by happenstance isn't a victory in this case...it's nothing more than the simple act of scratching off the right bump on a lottery ticket and winning.
And....you have the same consumer timing skills as I. That's why I'll bet we both have a room or closet loaded with reminders. Anybody wanna buy a Corvair or Edsel?

Toshiba is not gonna "officially" kill the format yet. They still have a ton of product out there. They have to spin this for the retailers.
They've lost a ton of money. They have to spin it for the stockholders. Somebody has to walk the plank.
So if you're waiting for official.... you might have to waut a minute. the fact that they've stopped new production means they've pulled the plug.... its just a matter of time.

Then you should show your support by buying an extra player or two, and go take Amazon and Deep Discount DVD up on their throw-away specials of HD DVD movies.
Denial is the first stage. Congratulations.

Toshiba Exits HD DVD Business,
Ceding Market to Sony's Blu-ray
By YUKARI IWATANI KANE
February 19, 2008 9:26 a.m.
TOKYO -- Blaming the loss of support from a key movie studio, Toshiba Corp. said it is pulling out of the HD DVD business, handing victory to Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology in the fierce format war over high-definition DVDs.
Toshiba said Tuesday that it would cease production of its HD DVD players and recorders immediately and close out the business by the end of March.
"It was a heartbreaking decision, but we considered the impact of continuing the business on our earnings, the next-generation DVD market and consumers," said Toshiba Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida at a news conference. He later added that he realized there was no chance of winning the battle, particularly after Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., a longtime Toshiba partner, made a pivotal decision last month to side with Blu-ray. Since then, retailers from Best Buy Co. to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have all thrown their weight behind Blu-ray.
Though such swift decisions are rare for a Japanese company, especially when corporate pride is at stake, and analysts had assumed Toshiba would let the business fade out quietly, Mr. Nishida said the company felt it was important to read the market environment and take action quickly.

NO, that's Kal's territory and from what I remember reading this Forum software doesn't play nice with combining threads.

You can't combine threads in pbpBB (the software we use here), only split them. There are also no good mods for it.
Combining the 3-4 threads wouldn't work well anyway as it would be impossible to follow. Give a week and people won't care/read anymore anyway.

It's easier to follow than you think because all of the time stamps stay sequential, so most of the questions/responses stay clustered, just interweaved.
I agree... I'd prefer to see all 6-8 of these HDDVD threads combined. But if the current options don't easily allow for it, then so be it.
