I am trying to put together an inexpensive setup for my son's soccer coach and am trying to find the above. I use a NeuNeo player that upconverts and outputs via component and would like to find the same for him. I really need to find something inexpensive as all of this is coming out of my pocket. I have a 1271q with a little text burn in the corners I have had sitting around, an old 5.1 receiver that the tuner does not work, I picked up a cheap set of surround sounds off of e-bay for $15 This guy is a teacher and his wife is a stay at home mom so he does not have the cash to outlay for a theater setup. I had the teams soccer party at my house and he was blown away by my setup so I figured it would be a nice reward for his coaching efforts to provide something for him.

If you go with a Chinese or Korean player that will upconvert (scale) over component, then you're going to need a transcoder. Even a cheapy transcoder like a Vdigi will run another $50 or so. Total is what $150 or so?

You could go with a cheap HDMI-based player like a Philips from Walmart ($40), but then you have to add a HD Fury. Total is $200 or so. Ouch.

Would 480p be good enough for a freebie setup? You should be able to find a DVD player with VGA out, and just add a VGA to BNC cable. I would think you should be able to find one around in the Videogon or AVS marketplace or fleabay for under $50.

EDIT - Wow, I forgot about some of those older players!

Most D50's have componant inputs , 12xxx do not

I believe the component board from a D50 will fit a 12xxx series, check with Curt he might have one

I wish I would have kept all of my old parts. I had a DVDO doubler, a Sony 1271 switcher with all of the boards and an OTA HD Satellite receiver. I would have been able to set him up pretty well if I would have kept all of this stuff. Lesson for the future, never sell anything.

Dan, let me know if you want to go the component route. I have an Oppo 971 I need to sell which can have firmware installed to upconvert via component. It is one of the better component output players.

I guess I still get confused about the inputs. On the back of the 1271 I have 5 BNC connectors labeled the following;

R G/G Sync B Sync/HD VD

Is this not a component input? Could it be that this PJ had a component board added?

Component is YPrPb - only three connectors - and it's a totally different color space from RGB.

The interface you have on the 1271 is a combo RGB interface. Using that, the 1271 can handle RGB 3 different ways: RGsB (sync on green, sometimes called SoG, 3 wires), RGBS (composite (H and V together) sync, 4 wires), or RGBHV (5-wire, separate H and V sync).

The input on the D50 can handle video input in any of the above-mentioned formats - all on the same connectors, just by configuring the hardware with internal menus.

99% of CRT projectors cannot accept component inputs. Only the very latest ones. On most you don't want to use it either, better to do the transcoding externally as on-board transcoders are not very good on the few that do allow component input (or so I'm told).
