Can someone direct me to a link or give advise on the best way to get into a Blu-Ray and HD DVD players?

I Have a Marqee 8100 and currently have a conventional DVD player, but would like to get into High Definition. Should I go with a stand alone player of a HTPC?

Thanks.

Well, if you go the standalone route you are either going to need something to transcode from digital to analog (e.g. HDMI-->RGBhv), or transcode from Component to what your projector can accept (e.g. YPbPr-->RGBhv).

And it is Blu-ray, not Blue-Ray. Not trying to pick on you, but trying to buy something on a reseller's website (like a player) is going to be difficult when you search for something that doesn't exist. Smile

Oops, Blu-Ray...

I guess a PC offers more versatility. I suppose I can build one with a remote control too?

I'll have to start researching as I don't know much about what kind of set up I should get/build, Video cards, etc.

A PC is going to be more expensive than 2 stand alone players, an HDMI switch, and an HD Fury. It has some advantages and some disadvantages, so choose wisely.

HD DVD players can be had for <$250 new. One thing to note is that BD players were released before BD-J was ready for prime time. So, early used players won't be able to take advantage of all future disc features, but they can be had pretty cheap now. Even new BD players (still without BD-J fully implemented) can be had for <$500.

At this point in time is there much reason to continue caring about HD DVD?

Yes,

HD-DVD's will continue to be produced and the ones that are already avalable will still play. Also if and when Blu-ray wins that will probably lead to lower prices for consumers on remaining HD-DVD's.

If you are using standalone players I'm not sure if it makes sense to get one but if you are building a HTPC why not just get the combo drive as it only costs a little more than a blu-ray only drive.

We can always dream that maybe we won't get screwed by Sony and the BDA, but alas, it does appear to be a dying dream. Sad
