i'll check when i get back home. i don't remember what it said for sync.
it's starting to look like i'm cabling up the rtc2200 incorrectly, but i can match colours with the best of them i wonder if i have a problem in one of the VGA-RGBHV cables that markertek sold me...

zap,
Might try plugging in your local monitor to the 2200 just to check. Doug

no local monitor. well, i have a computer monitor upstairs, but it weighs more than i can lift. i've never understood why a Sun monitor weighs about 3 times that of the same sized PCmonitor...

i did try switching the H and V at one point and that did not help.
i'm really thinking that the XG wants neg sync and that the 2200 is putting out positive. the reason i think this is that when things are working, the XG info page says neg sync and when things are not working (ie: the 2200 is in the mix) the XG info page says pos sync.

zap,
The XG can take just about anything you can throw at it. You just need to do the signal entry for the right signal properties and have a usable signal going to it. It may be the computer that sees the RTC2200 as a different monitor and driver but ??
In short the XG will take any combo of sync polarities. Done many of Kims and never had a problem before. Doug

Hmmm,
Cable at the projector. You don't have R on the ACAT connector do you? Doug

found the problem. cables. i rememberd that i have a pair of long VGA -> 5BNC cables and used them to install the RTC2200 instead of the pair of 6" ones i was using. powered up the PJ and got a great picture. it's a "new signal" but looks identical to the SXVGA that i was using. i'll do a data copy and rename it SXVGAkim or something
Kim - thanks for the offer of shipping a new one, but it looks like there is nothing wrong with the one that i have.
now to see which of the cables is making a return trip to Markertek ...

yep, looks like Markertek puts pin 14 to black and pin 13 to yellow. all my other cables have that reversed.
so i was feeding the 2200 with H and V sync swapped and then feeding the XG from the 2200 with H and V sync swapped. no wonder the XG was trying to sync on green.
"i've looked every where for sync - maybe i'll find it over here...."
sigh. now to label the darn yellows "this is really black" and the black "this is really yellow" so that i don't get bit again...
thank you to everyone who offered suggestions. and Kim for offering to ship up a new unit before we had even confirmed that it was the problem.
