Getting new combo drive tmw.
Want to know settings on pc for best playback. H/W accel etc (using Nvidia 8600gt)

Playback software:

PowerDVD Ultra

or

Theatertek (using filter graph)

------------------------------------------

When playing back the HD format discs, do I need to set the desktop resolution to 1920x1080? What should my refresh rate be set to? 60 or 72hz or?

I am using analog to my Marquee. Is there a way I can verify that the computer is putting out 1080p? Since there can be restriction on playback if the proper hardware is not used.

What do I have to setup in either PowerDVD or in the filtergraph to utilize the 8600gt hardware decoding function? Or is this just automatic?

Thank you
Darren

How will you be outputting the protected content? Does that video card have HDMI output, or does it use DVI that simply ignores HDCP?

Output through VGA. VGA currently has no restrictions. Otherwise I could use DVI to HDMI adapter with my Moome card.

Let us know if this works. I read somewhere that because of the HDCP on these cards they won't output 1080P but the 7900 series would because Power DVD doesn't see and HDCP on them.

Do you have AnyDVD?

But, to get that I would need part of my original post answered. That is:

"I am using analog to my Marquee. Is there a way I can verify that the computer is putting out 1080p? Since there can be restriction on playback if the proper hardware is not used."

Wait a sec... since when does TheaterTek play back HD-DVD / Blu-ray discs?

It doesn't.

Only PowerDVD 7.3 does, and only the newest version plays back the newest discs(movies on hard drive, whatever).

With a Marquee, you simply need to push the * button twice and read out the frequencies of the signal being displayed to know if its 1080p or not...

Unless you want judder, and LOTS of it, you'll have to set your refresh for your video card to a multiple of 24, use whatever you prefer, I generally use 72Hz, but I've seen 48Hz and it looked fine too...

In the PowerDVD video menu simply check the "Hardware Acceleration" box to use the DXVA, but if you're using WinXP OS, I think you have to have at least 163.12(?) beta drivers for your video card, or DXVA won't work.

Sorry I should have answered this more clearly. If your desktop is set to 1920 x 1080 and you fire up Power DVD Ultra and play a HD disk then it will put out 1080P. However, I'm not sure if Power DVD will give you a warning about HDCP restrictions or automatiacly downscale. Hmmm maybe I'll turn off AnyDVD and try it if I get a chance this weekend.

VGA out works fine.

No downscaling.

I use:
- Ati 2600 XT (the nvidia doesnt have VC-1 acceleration)
- Powerdvd 7.3
- Reclock (configured for forced load in PowerDVD), this IS needed INMO without it there can be occasional stutter.
- Any DVD HD (removes all HDCP "problems"....)
- Win XP

I am running DVI out and HDFury to connect to the Barco port 5.

Of course making sure that the refresh rate is matched to the material aswell.

No stutter at all.

I haven't had much luck with Reclock. With Powerdvd 7.3 Build 2911 it causes judder, for me, rather than prevents it.

Shame, as Reclock is just about my favorite bit of HTPC software Sad

Strange, for me it helps a lot. Without it I get occasional stutter, with it, smooth playback.

Are you sure that it is loading? (so you see the clock in the taskbar)

I use PowerDVD 7.3 but build 3104 (dont think that matters....)

Yes, I'm sure it's loading. You get two instances in the taskbar. One for the main title, and one for some sub stream.

Yes, and I'm using 96hz.

Before the project died, I was a reclock forum moderator. I'm not an expert, but I do know the basics of getting it working. It just seems to make it stutter on occasion. I'll play around again tonight.

Do you need to worry about HDCP "problems" when you have the HDFury attached? Does it depend on the video card being compliant or not, etc? I'm trying cobble a HTPC together from older stuff and some of this HDCP stuff is still beyond me.

I'm currently doing PS3 -> HDFury -> Barco5, but I don't think this is going to cut it for me long term. I'm thinking about getting the LG dual mode drive and building a HTPC around it.

It will playback the file on the disc using a custom filtergraph. I have not played a disc from the drive yet but I did play back a copy of Goodfellas BD that I ripped to an external hard drive. Theatertek worked great! Although no chapter indexing etc . It's worth it.

See:

Is this where you add the name of the program in Reclock?
