I need two digital audio outputs on a computer, if I add a sound card can a computer output the same sound on both (the cared and the integrated SPDIF)?

Possibly,
However I would just split the signal coming out of the PC, I've never been able to get two cards or a card and the intergrated audio at the same time but I bet if you look hard enough you'll find a way to do it.

Hey Scott, what are you needing to output twice?

This is not for my downstairs set up. This is a real simple setup in the family room. On the PC I will have snapshots, home movies, netflix streaming video and my ripped CD collection. The music needs to be piped into my receiver and all the other sound goes right through the TV speakers.
Erik, what device splits a SPIDF, can a simple RCA splitter work?

now that I am thinking about it, both the TV and receiver will never be on at once so a simple RCA splitter should work.

I don't see any reason why a simple RCA splitter wouldn't work, If you have one sitting around try it. However I would upgrade your sound if you are using the AC-97 onboard sound that came with many PC's, I was amazed at the difference a $10 SB Live card made.

I don't think 2 soundcards would work anyway. Programs only access one card at a time.

I agree. Winblows would make a mess of things at the registry level in serveral different ways. Even if you were able to assign unique resources to each card like Mark said the audio codecs probably wouldn't allow for the program to do what you want....and again, then there's Windows control freak kernel to deal with.

Windows handles muitple soundcards just fine. I have the onboard audio active as well as a Revo 5.1, and an ATi HDMI audio device.
I really don't get why everybody bags Windows - it works fine 99% of the time.
The problem is that applications only use one soundcard.
