I'm curious if anyone here has had the pleasure of seeing or trying out one of these Sony HDVS Projectors? From my research the Sony HDIH-1200 HDVS projector was released in 1989 and featured 9" LC tubes with EM focus and motorized Nikon Lens. (Also HDIH-2000/3000) Apparently they sold for $60,000 which really starts to give the Sony G90 a run for its money for MSRP. Sony also apparently sold a dual HDIH-3000 stack setup.

I'd love to experience (or own) one of these projectors someday, however considering the rarity I won't get my hopes up. I'm a big Sony HDVS enthusiast with a collection of HDTV history books and a Sony HDM-2830 monitor, so seeing one of these would just be awesome. I even got the Sony HDIH-1200 service manual in case I ever come across one.

So has anyone ever seen or worked on one of these before? I'd be cool just to know what these projectors were like.

There are threads about the HDIH projectors, the lens-tube pair produce a very sharp picture indeed, but as one would expect from such an old projector these were quite picky on input timings and refuse to sync to some resolutions... also video bandwidth is subpar.

Hmmm

Is this the machine marketed by Tektronix and IBM? I set one up at an IBM meeting; the first digital convergence system I had seen. Meant for Cad/Cam workstations around 64khz.......

Thanks for the thread links Kal. The 25 year powerlifting thread goes over the projector in detail. It seems the only thing special besides the HDVS history are those super sharp Nikon lenses.

There seems to be a predecessor projector called the HDI-120 from around 1985. No idea about the lenses, but it's definitely surreal to think that someone was looking at high definition on a projector back in 1985.

I had one. It had been used to monitor the HDTV signals from Winter Olympics in 1994 from Lillehammer for the Japanese HDTV-feed.

It was like new when I got it. Pristine crts. The optics on this was razor-sharp and gave a contrasty picture way better than any crts I have seen since.

The shortcommings is very low bandwidth and poor performance from the component inputs. I plugged in a new IFB-card and feed it a good 720p at 48hz and it was razorsharp from center to edge, I mean really dlp-sharp. 1080i through the internal decoder looked sh*t, but through the transcoder in a Faroudja it looked amazing in scenes with little motion. The optics and focus on this was so sharp that 1080i in moving scenes fell completely apart.

The color filter was probaly also of very good quality and combinded with the excellent optics it gave incredible color rendition and pop.

From what I remember the lenses are totally different. But it could work for someone willing doing the work and retrofit the whole assembly with the c-element and liquid chamber onto a more capable crt.

All I remember is that the label on the lenses said 'Nikkor'? It could be Nikkon, but it is so long time ago.

The lenses was so heavy. I compared them to HD10 lenses and HD10's felt like 'feathers' in compariason.

Its a shame that the Barco 909 and the G90 didnt have lenses that truly showed the full potential of their capabilities.

Lenses are expensive, and it was probably a combination of cost and flexibility, and that the lenses it came with was 'good enough' for the most at the time.

Not a projector, but I remember seeing a very early HDTV demo at a technology conference in Italy in 1983 (or 1984?)! Maybe a 24-27" screen if I remember right? There was no HDTV content at that time, so they just had a live camera setup.

I had a HDIH-1200. It was from 1993. I had very good contact with Sony Norway at that time, and they said there was very few sold in Europe.

Mine had serial number x0000013
