I just scored a couple of sound cards surplus from 10ish years ago.

M-Audio Delta

and

M-Audio 0404

Anyone have a recommendation as to which PC hardware new or old, and which OS, new or old I should build to go with these?

OK I've checked my available stores ( as in my personal stores,; think like ships stores) and I've come up with a Socket AM2 motherboard, 4GB ram, a 600 watt PC Power and Cooling PS and a Lan Box Lite.
These cards were around when WinXP was a thing as well as XP64 bit so maybe I'll try both. I also found a 7200 RPM 500GB hard drive and lastly a GeForce 8500(?) that I bought in '06 for the projector trials in the Green Machine.

Does anybody remember the audio bug WinXP 32 bit SP3 put into the system? The audio would click every 20 seconds or so? I had to roll my Green machine PVR back to SP2 to make the recorded content watchable.

I'm looking at processors for this. I can get a 65 watt 2.2 ghZ Dual core or a 125watt 3Ghz dual core. Any preferences?

Still would like some advice if anybody has some.

I remember these cards! I believe I still have one of their simpler cards in my circa 2000 HTPC that I haven't turned on in almost 15 years.

How did it sound?

Because these cards have been around for so long they are well supported. A/V Linux should support them, also Ubuntu Studio

I found my 500gb HDD drive last night so I believe that was the last piece of the puzzle. I should have 14 channels of recording when this is assembled. Do I need it? Nope. But having fun with surplus is what I do.

Also picked up a 50th Anniversary Stylophone. An 80's Alesis reverb box and a Berhinger compressor. Why? Just to make noise.
I'll have to total the MSRP when I'm all done.

Obviously the bottleneck wasn't the soundcard, but our skills Wink

It was a christian rock band in the 2008-10 timeframe, sang in hungarian. The "studio work" was total DIY, on these recordings the drums were programmed since that is the most difficult to record properly, we did not even try it... I played the bass guitar Razz

Wow that took a while. I ordered Arctic Silver thermal paste from Amazon.ca and it shipped from the UK! I hope to get to this build this weekend.
