Hi guys!

Friend of mine is looking to add a turntable to his 2-channel setup and is wondering what phono pre-amp to pick up as his receiver doesn't include one (as most don't these days). I have no idea if he needs MC or MM but I'm assuming most pre-amps sold separately do both?

I haven't seen the rest of his equipment but I do believe it's mid-fi stuff from the 1990s (Adcom, Paradigm, etc).

Not looking to break the bank here - I'm thinking spending more than $100-150 would be overkill given what I understand from the rest of the setup. Any recommendations?

Kal

To me, many will sound exactly the same. It's a simple eq circuit (RIAA) around a gain stage (op amp).
To the audiophiles, I'll be a heretic by saying that, but for your typical consumer stuff, I don't think you'll hear the difference.

I've opened a bunch up, and that includes similar things like mic preamps, and many use the same op amps as the more expensive ones.

Bottom of the line is Pyle, about $30 USD new, but I think anything from eBay or Amazon would suffice.

Thanks Curt! Funny you should mention Pyle, because I sent him a link telling him that this would probably be perfectly adequate for his needs:

It's dirt cheap!

So he did end up ordering this Pyle one as his cartridge is MM: https://amzn.to/2HevzTw
Certainly can't go wrong with that price.
