Well hello everyone. It has been a while since I have posted anything. My Ampro 4600 has been running flawlessly for a long time. Found solution to keep from having any HV shutdowns.
With that being said I now have a problem that I need an idea what board is the problem. I went in the kitchen and while i was in there I smelled the familiar smell of burnt electronics. I cam back in and convergence is all screwed and none of the adjustment buttons do anything. The remote shows that they are changing numbers up and down but nothing happens on the scree. I have almost every board for it but I think one. SO where should I look first for the burnt board?

Uh oh.......

Boards that use a lot of current are more likely to burn up a resistor so pull boards like the horizontal deflection and convergence to start, and the power section, and look for charred things.

Change the convergence board and convergence output board. Looks like you have enough spare parts, which is good, as I've thrown out all my Ampro stuff a couple of years ago.

So far I have pulled and inspected all the convergence boards. I have yet to see a single thing that looks heated on any of them. Tomorrow I will drag out the spare PJ and start swapping boards.
I also noticed that the image looked wrapped and when I tried to adjust the blanking it done absolutely nothing. Not sure if that is controlled on the same boards

An overload on the power supply can do that. Start by pulling the convergence output board, and turn the set on. you should be totally unconverged (obviously) but the smell should be gone. Same with the warping of the image.

Finally getting back to this. I have changed the Horizontal output and the Convergence output boards. No changes. It has not had any burning smell since it first happened. If it did i could find where it was coming from. But I decided to try and reconverge it. I went into the menus and started adjusting and it all moves but when It asked to adjust the blanking I get nothing. None of the blanking works in any direction.

Have you tested the memory battery on the CPU board?

I replaced the battery with a new one about a year ago. But now I have a new problem. I was changing boards and decided to change out the RGB input board. The one I put in must have been bad. It only had green and blue both very dark then it all th video died and I deen it blew the +40 fuse. I put the original board back in and replaced the fuse. Now ever time I start it up all the relays will engage but no video and it blows the fuse again. When I replace it and turn it on I can see the LED fuse indicators for a few of them dim some and the fuse for the +40 will start to glow like it is going to blow and I turn it off. What got messed up from the other board?

I tried it with nothing connected to it but power and controller and it still now wants to blow the +40 fuse

Ok , I changed out both video cards and the red tube board. I still get no pic and the +40 is on but after it is on for about 30 seconds you will see the fuse start to glow and if you don't shut it off quick it will blow. When I look inside the lens I see nothing on blue or red and just a dim straight virticle line not real thin it has some width to it on the green. I checked G2 voltage and got 52v Could that card have done that much damage?

Ok now I have changed out the Horz supply, Horiz drive and Vert defl. I have an image back with no convergence and the +40 is blown. But even with that fuse blown I still have a picture. I am not sure what next.

OK I have now changed out the Convergence panel and that was it. Everything is now working as it should and the +40 is staying on. Now it needs a complete new setup. It is decent but long ways from perfect.

Well that was short lived. I got started on convergence and part way through image gone again. I am guessing that the boards I changed. Horz supply, Horiz drive and Vert defl are now toast. They did have some markings on them from a sharpie. So I guess they had issues. But now I am done because I don't know if I have replacements. I have a 4000g or 4200G , not sure which one in storage. But I don't think the boards will work in my 4600.

Its pretty amazing that so many of these museum pieces of the AV world are still humming along 20-30 years later. Keep up the good fight and get it running again.

Has to be modules from a 4300 or 4600. I've got nothing left, sorry! If you look on ebay, there was a guy in California selling a 4600 recently for $800 on eBay. Of course it didn't sell. He emailed me about 3 weeks ago, saying he's willing to give it away. tell him I sent you, maybe he still has it?

Frankly, consider scrapping it at this point, or switch to a Marquee or Barco 909. Better performance, and more parts available.

Or go digital. Very Happy
