The wife and I finally got around to watching this on Blu-ray this past weekend. There is a scene in which Vice Admiral Holdo commits a selfless act of jumping the rebel cruiser into light speed by going through Snoke's bigger-than-a-dreadnought ship. While Snoke's ship is much larger than the dreadnought destroyed in the beginning of the movie, it seems to acknowledge the energy delivered even by a much smaller mass moving in a great velocity to produce tremendous amount of energy.
Think of it like you would a bullet. Tiny amount of mass moving at a great velocity produces a nice amount of kinetic energy that the target much absorb. With this in mind, why hasn't this F-ing tactic been used before? I would imagine a handful of even destroyer-sized rebels ships could inflict a lot of damage against things like the death star.
I would think that the weakness Han Solo identified in The Force Awakens to get past the shields of the planet/star killer could be used to have inflicted damage via the 'barrel' of that planter-size weapon. Then there is the question of why not using a remotely piloted X-Wing fights to jump to light speed at the dreadnought-cannon dragged down to the planet at the end of episode 8. Seems like an easy and simple way to take out the enemy.
Hell, you don't even need to use the force to get major jobs done, IMO.

Your trying to apply logic to a Star Wars film?
Here goes:
The rebels have never had many such ships suitable for this type of attack. The empire always had far more, larger and better ships than the Alliance/Resistance. No for nothing but the Executor crashed into the Death Star in ROTJ and it didn't do squat; perhaps not at light speed but nonetheless it was like a pin prick and it dwarfed anything the Rebels had (it was 26 miles long...)
The physics of Star Wars Hyperspace have been a bit different than other sci-fi films. Unlike in Star Trek where you see stars, the hyperspace in Star wars looks like another dimension all together. According to this wiki page that is the precisely the intent: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hyperspace
It appears that as the ship propels forward it leaves "real space" and enters Hyperspace. The point at which that happens apparently would vary based on the proximity to a particular hyperspace lane. "Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations..." Making such ramming tactics unpredictable as you could enter the hyperspace prior to hitting the target.
