I totally rebuilt an old set of speakers with mostly EV parts. Right now I am having an issue with loud snaps in the mid range and shutting the amp down. I am thinking the caps need to be replaced but am having trouble finding them. They are 30UF-70VPN. Anyone have any ideas?

Tell me that is just a Boss dust cap, and not a Boss speaker? If so, it's 4 ohm most likely, not 8, and that could be causing issues. that mid is to die for though, I have the original Interface D EV speakers with those in them.

Curt the mids and crossovers are from the speakers we bought from GL in Tennessee. Back about 5-6 years ago. Remember you got the woofers and tweeters from them? I will have to check butI think the Boss woofers are 8 ohm. The crossovers are 6ohm. I have to boost the base a lot for them to sound good.

This is how I have to set the EQ to be able to use them. And yes they really do need more in the transition from low to mid but if I add anything more to that area the mids will pop loudly and amp will shut down.[img][/img]

That's a ridiculous eq curve. Guaranteed you're clipping your amp hard, and will destroy your drivers and/or amp. No decently built speaker needs that kind of bass boost.

That is my point. The speakers sounded decent before. I know the Mids and Tweeters are much better than what was there. I am guessing that I am going to have to change out the crossovers. They are not right for this set up. The highs are crazy high. Granted it is in a wood and glass room so nothing to absorb any but I have to cut them hard to get it close to sounding right.

Curt, You are familiar with these Mids. What cut off points should I be looking for when selecting new crossovers?

Sorry, I don't know. I know of the mids, have two in my cabinets, and a spare, but the specs and crossover points should be online somewhere. Assuming the tweets are EV T350s, then those and the mids should be a good mate. <edit> Wait, I lie, my tweeters are different than yours, see below. I think it's your woofer that's the issue.

Here's the documentation:

The tweeters are Klipsch.

how are those crossovers set up in the speaker? do both speakers have 2 threeway crossovers? is that a three way mid in the first speaker pic?
30uF / 70v?? parts express will have some 33/100 bipolar... and 27/100 should not be too hard to find.
are you planning on building new crossovers?

Jask,
The old speakers had a cheap 3 way mid that was wired as just a one way. The pic of the cross overs shows the original Radio Shack cheap crossover that was in them and the EV crossovers I replaced them with. Only one cross over per speaker. I am no expert with electronics at all. I was wondering if old bad Caps could be my problem and replacing them fix it. If that is the problem I want to replace the caps. If it is not the problem then I will replace the crossovers completely.

You can't just drop random speakers with random crossovers into random cabinets. That's like taking a Chevy, putting in a Ford engine and a VW transmission.

Speakers have different efficiencies and impedances, which all need to be taken into consideration. I believe your woofer is far less efficient than your mid and tweeter, but your tweeter is less efficient than your mid.

You might consider selling the mids, which you should get good money for, ditto for the tweeter, and do some research as to what will work with that cabinet. Check out www.partsexpress.com, by and large they sell decent speakers.

yeah... not sure how deep you want to dive in this.. speakers are a ton of fun but..they can be an obsession and a deep deep cash well. the lower crossover does not look like an oem EV crossover and it is massive in terms of the induction coils... that is much bigger than I would expect to see in the Monster vintage patrician EV cabs, or the interface D speakers curt has... they look home brew and given the 70V caps they are old.... caps get old and crap out.
that EQ curve is beyond screwed... you have two cab configs and a bucket of drivers... I do not know about Boss speakers but from what I remember they were sh*tty 4ohm car audio... ?
look for some speakers that match... even if you need to rebuild the Xovers... no big deal - if the drivers are good. when I see drivers that have rotten foam being driven, I worry the voice coil is shorted from being off center.... driven off axis..
pull that EV mid. out and put it on a multimeter, check the Ohm reading, and if it is good sell it and use the money to buy a matched set of speakers..

do you just want speakers or do you want to learn about speakers? ... we can help you either way Wink

You can learn a ton designing a crossover, have a google , or look at the www. audio judgment page.. use the search to find " how to build a passive crossover" page

Actually a dog ripped the foam surrounds.
I think I will build some new crossovers. I know these woofers had a ton of bass before. Now I cant get hardly anything out of them unless I boost the hell out of them. Same cabinets so the difference is the crossover. Now weather I can get the sound to match right between the drivers we will have to see.

Why not start working with the caps that are there? If the caps test bad you could replace them with the 33/100 from parts express and see if that helps

Well I just finished replacing the complete crossovers. I forgot to add to the EQ pic that the tone settings in the receiver were Bass +6 and Treble -2. Now with the new cross overs the tone settings in the Receiver are both set to 0. And the EQ is almost flat across. The now sound amazingly clear and plenty of punch on the low end. Problem solved.

Thank you for everyone's input.
