Okay, I picked up the basement a little, and here is what the setup looks like in the light (with Videobeam approximately positioned).

Ditch the posters, put up some knotty pine, a shag rug on the floor, and we'll be in business.

For what it's worth, I tried contacting the Mocom guys again this week, and this time I did get in touch with a rep.

He said they do still have the capability to make a 4:3 curved screen, and would sell a 92-inch for $950.

I was very, very tempted to go ahead and buy one at under $1000, but I ultimately decided against it because I think if I go there, I'll feel pressure to start upgrading the rest of my system, and I'd rather keep it 'vintage' for now.

I also asked what price a 105" 16:9 screen was, and he said that would be $2000. I thought it was odd that it was that much more since he mentioned the $950 for the 4:3 included a set-up fee since it's technically out of production, but apparently these things get exponentially more expensive as more surface material is needed.

I don't know that 4:3 screen would be killer retro look.

Make the room darker, get a courdory couch and chair, a pleather Lazy-Boy recliner, wood panelling on the walls, paint the ceiling flat black and crank up the SEGA master system.

No I didn't but I did see the picture you posted above in the thread with the SEGA Master System in it.
That was my first system with 3D back in 1987! So much fun. I made all my relatives buy me games for Christmas that year instead of socks. Laughing

Oh yeah, and a funkier carpet. A carpet so thick it could star in a 70's porn flick. Laughing

I think I've changed my mind and I'm going to go ahead and order the Mocom screen. I'll post to let you guys know how the transaction goes and how I like the screen.

I got the actual dimensions of the Mocom MD-92, which is supposed to be a 92" 4:3 screen and it actually has the EXACT same dimensions as the VideoBeam screen, which is in reality an 86" screen (52"x69"). So I guess maybe they are cheating the measurement by following the curve instead of going straight across. For me, though, that works out great since I didn't want the VideoBeam's overscan to be visible on the screen surface anyway.

One thing I'll go ahead and say even though the order isn't actually in yet is that freight is absolutely ridiculous on these. I guess it's understandable since they have to ship them whole all the way from South Korea, but in this case the shipping was almost as much as the screen itself (about $800). I guess it wouldn't be as big a deal if you were planning on buying one of the more expensive screens anyway, but for me that about doubled the cost and was hard to swallow. Unfortunately, your options for a high-gain curved screen (aside from buying a used one, like my first attempt that didn't turn out well) are basically either this, or a DIY 'suction' screen with a high gain fabric (which still won't be as high gain as this). My initial reaction after hearing the full quote was that it was just way too much, but after thinking about it for a week and watching a few more movies on my current screen, my opinion started shifting. See, the screen I have looks wonderful right in the center, but gets fuzzy out toward the edges, and I think this is due both to the damage that happened toward the edges of the screen and also due to the curve of the screen possibly being too deep. Based on the photos I've seen of the Mocom, while it still has a substantial curve, I believe it is shallower than the curve of my current screen and may be able to keep a sharper focus all the way across. Plus I find it hard to get over the 'grain' introduced into the picture by the texture of the paint that the auto body shop put on. It wouldn't be bad if it was uniform, but unfortunately the way it turned out, you can see patches of slightly different grain around the screen every time there's a panning shot. So I think for me it's going to be worth the extra amount of money to get a newly manufactured surface to project on.

Yeah I bought a few hard screens some years ago. I got 1 for $100 plus $300 to ship it. It got damaged after I got it. Annoying.

The others were very well crated.

I have now officially placed the order. Apparently they prefer wire transfers for payment, but I asked if I could do PayPal, and they said that was alright.

Oh, yeah. I've been second-guessing myself at every step of this process, haha. This one purchase is around twice as much as I've spent on my entire setup so far (including both projectors and my refinished older screen). It's a crazy amount of money for me to spend on an entertainment product.

I bought a Stuart Studio Tek 130 110" 10 years ago and hung it on the wall at my GF's place. It was pricey, but the image as compared to a painted wall was night and day. $660 for the screen plus oversized shipping charges, close to $1000 used. I don't regret it for a second. I've had a SONY D50, 3 JVC's, a Canon SXRD, my SONY handycam PJ790 projector and Velvia 50 film out of a slide projector on it. Looks great!

You will change projectors but the screen lives on.

Just an FYI 110 4:3 is 95" 16:9.

Alright, looks like lead time on the screens is about a week. They are telling me that they expect to ship on Thursday.

Wow, the delivery is currently scheduled for Monday! That's fast!

EDIT: Actually the domestic tracking site says it's coming Thursday... The international site says Monday, though. But I guess I trust the domestic site more since they're the ones who'd be sending out the driver.
