I picked up an Advent Videobeam 1000A from a seller in Oklahoma City last weekend, but it didn't come with the screen. It seems like it's going to be near impossible (or at least extremely impractical) for me to find an original screen, so it seems I have a couple of options.

1. Find a similar screen from another manufacturer or projector series (less impractical, but still pretty difficult) that will work.

2. Build my own 'torus' curved screen and try to get it as close to the original as possible.

3. Project it onto the flat screen I already have, accept it will never be that watchable, and just keep it as a conversation piece. I'd really prefer to get a silver torus screen set up, though, because I really think my existing Sony projector would benefit from the higher gain in terms of brightness and contrast (not to mention when I first tested my Sony, it was on a silver slide projector screen that actually reflected light well enough for me to play light gun games on my NES and Sega Master System, which was really cool).

As for #1, I've found on the local Craigslist a Sony KP-7220 with torus screen that looks like it would be great, except for the screen being about a foot shorter diagonally than the original (per model number, that projector came with a 72" screen, and the dimensions I've found for the Videobeam 1000 screen seem to indicate it was an 84" screen). I've sent the seller a few e-mails asking if I can come see it, but have gotten no responses. I'm not sure if mail relay is eating my e-mails or if the seller is just ignoring them, but it may be impossible to actually get my hands on this one. But assuming I was able to pick this one up, how usable would it be being a foot shorter diagonally than the original? I do know it'd be slightly awkward to use with the Sony setup I currently have because I have the 'medium' spacers in and I'd have to change them out for the 'small' spacers for this screen, which I'd really rather not do.

With option #2, I'd like to know if someone with a Videobeam 1000 screen could give me a little info as far as measurements on how the curve is constructed? Like how far do the sides and top/bottom of the frame bend back from the corners of the screen? I'd want to make sure I get it 'right' considering the curve won't be easily adjustable once I have the wood for the vacuum box cut.

I suppose another thing I could try would be to paint my flat screen silver and see if the hot spots bother me or not, but I don't know if that'd be a good idea. I'm currently using unpainted blackout cloth.

Opinions?

Painting a flat screen silver is a very BAD idea. You basically end up with a mirror. "Hot spot" doesn't begin to describe it.

You shouldn't use gain much above about 1.3 with a flat screen or the hotspotting gets objectionable. Silver paint is probably gain 4-6.

I'll send them a message but I'm afraid to find out how much that costs, haha.

I miscalculated in my original post, it looks like the Videobeam screen is actually 88" diagonal, if you extend the corners (since they are rounded off). Which is, coincidentally, almost exactly the same size as the flat screen I already built for my Sony (it's 90" more or less).

Let us know. I always wondered what their pricing is like.

Well... I haven't heard anything yet. I have a suspicion they may not actually get back to me.

I just send them a message too asking for pricing. I'll let you know if they get back to me.

Alright. I'm definitely curious to see the pricing. Although honestly, I will probably end up just making the vacuum box style screen anyway. If nobody tells me different, I'll just go with one the same size as the screen I'm using currently (72"x54", a little bigger than the Advent screen actually, although the viewable area would be about the same if I mask it), and build it so the curve goes back about 3" on the top and bottom (which would be about a 1.7" curve depth on the sides if my calculations are correct). That should be *about* right for a standard CRT projector at the viewing distance and area I want, so I hope it'd work for the Videobeam as well.

The only thing I'd have to worry about then is the type of fabric to use. I kind of want to try a fabric that's already silver, but I don't know if I could find one that blocks enough light so it might be that painted blackout cloth would still be the way to go there (I know I could layer up fabric, but I'd be nervous about getting the layers stretched out enough to sit together without wrinkles).

A rep in the 519 area code got back to me. Let's see if he can provide a price list.

They offer a 7 gain silver material for DIY in adhisive and non adhisive.
5.9 feet high adhisive material
5.4 feet high non-adhisive material

Mocom has come up in the forum before. I'm not sure anybody ever actually got a price quote, but the general consensus was "too much $$$ for me..."

Anywhere from 87" to 90" in 4:3 would work.

They have an 90" 4:3 2.5 gain screen front/rear projection material
$720 USD plus shipping from Korea.

They also have 7 gain and 18 gain but none pre-made in 4:3 aspect.

They have an 82.3" 16:9 18 gain
for $750 USD plus shipping

Do you know what the gain on the original Advent screen was?

They do custom sizes too. I could ask for you. Choose your gain.

I *think* the Videobeam screen was something like 10 gain?

I'll just stick with something homemade, though. I'm not really up for spending multiple hundreds on this.

Yeah I figured. I wonder what they would charge for just the screen material
