Bd player ? Also most claim to "upscale" BD to almost 4k. Is that a good thing ? I have seen some as low as 120 bucks.
Thanks in advance for any input. Jeff

All 4K players will upscale to 4K, as will all 4K TVs.

You asked if that's a "good thing". That's not really a meaningful question I'm afraid, as it doesn't make any sense / can't be answered. Your 4K TV requires a built in scaler to convert every signal type to 4K so that it fills the screen. So it's a requirement. Upscaling's been in every digital flat panel TV since they were first invented. They always convert the signal to the native resolution. They have to, otherwise displaying an SD 480i signal on a 1080p HDTV would appear as a small postage stamp size image taking up only 1/6th of the screen.

As for a "good" 4K blu-ray player, if you're only using it as a transport (moving bits from the 4K Blu-ray disc to the TV) it doesn't matter what you buy. They'll all be identical as far as image quality goes as bits are bits. Some may have different features or things that they'll say will "enhance" the image quality (which I tend to stay away from).

FWIW, most people (including myself) are staying away from 4K discs and players until more content is available. It's (IMHO) not worth it. There's barely anything out there. I just bought a new flat panel TV too and stayed away from 4K for the same reason. I'd rather buy a better quality 1080p TV for less money than a cheaply made 4K TV. (My 2 cents). Resolution is overrated, especially on a TV where the max size is typically only 55-65" diagonal.

What 4K content will you be watching?

Kal

totally agree kal. which is why i bought the x900 instead of the uhd compliant replacement.

content is king, and at the moment, there is hardly any content. certainly not enough to justify the doubling of the projector price and replacing my blu-ray player...

My 10 year old sony was getting lines in it so I figured it didn't have much life left. So I was looking to replace it. I don't watch much on it, mostly news. My wife uses it for everything including movies (when I'm not home) So I kinda put it in her hands as to what she wanted. She bought a 55" Samsung 4k. She got it pretty cheap. 850 bucks. I don't care for it myself, the image is sharp, almost too sharp for me. The TV upscales but it judders. I can make it do it less but not eliminate it. I thought maybe a 4K BD would help with the problem. If it wont I will just keep the Sony BD that is connected to it now. The TV has no buttons at all, everything goes through the remote and I hate the remote. Samsungs support is terrible. Oh well I have to deal with it now I guess.

On all sources? Meaning when watching TV and watching movies from the Blu-ray player?
It's probably some "feature" that's enabled. Turn all useless smoothing or weird scaling features off.

If it's in the TV, no.

Kal, yes its on all sources. It does it less on BD for some reason. I have been steadily turning things off and on in settings to try to fix it but to no avail. Samsungs support really sucks.

If it happens on all sources it has to be in the TV, so replacing your Blu-ray player won't change anything.

I will continue to call Samsung. Maybe I will get lucky and get a tech sometime. Thanks for the help. Jeff

Post a link to the PDF manual if you like - it may be something obvious.

Got a tech about an hour ago. Seems like its fixed for now. Time will tell. On a side note. If bits are bits so to say, would it make any difference if I was supplying signal from a DVD compared to BD ? Just curious, no big deal.

Reset to factory settings. TWICE then unplug. Plug back in and reset to factory settings again.

Can you be more specific about what you mean here? I don't understand.

I guess what I was trying to ask is that since the TV upscales to 4k and the dvd upscales to 1080i would there be a big difference in PQ between the dvd and the BD. Seems like it would but I am not sure what upscaling actually does especially being upscaled twice, once by the dvd and then again by the TV ? It confuses me. Seems like BD@ 1080P would be better if just "left alone".

I think you're asking if DVD and BD look different?

The answer is Yes.

BD is 1920x1080 resolution.
DVD is only 720x480 resolution.

Upscaling doesn't create information/extra detail. That's impossible. It just duplicates pixels to fill in the empty spaces. It basically just makes the pixels bigger. You don't get more detail.

BD has 6x the information as compared to DVD. A DVD scaled to BD resolution still looks like DVD. A DVD scaled to 4K resolution still looks like DVD.

Same goes with BD. BD scaled to 4K still looks like BD.

You can't get something from nothing. A scaler can't figure out what information is missing.

Thank you Kal. That cleared it up for me.
Upstairs waiting on my wife to get home flipped on HBO and watching The legend of Tarzan, It STILL judders. Only on fast moving scenes and much much less than before but still. I am starting to hate this TV.
