I got a box of spare 10PG parts Thursday. They were at my front door. The box was a site to see, it was approaching the look of being round. Do they make round boxes? There were fragile stickers all over it, but that was just like putting a piece of meat in front of a hungry dog and telling him no and then walking away. The sender packed the parts really well, but a transformer was still busted on the deflection board.
I have been at a USPS distribution center and seen first hand how they treat packages. If it's small enough to throw across the room, they will do that. I can imagine what they did to this box, push it off the back of the truck, drop it at my doorstep, toss it onto the conveyor, sit on it...
I stopped putting Fragile on any of my shipments. I just pack anything fragile like you would normally, yet, I then pack it again inside another cushioned lined box. I'm sure the outer box will see plenty of damage, but they would have to run it over with a truck to damage the item.

Yeah, and even if you documented the state of the box -- proving clearly that their handlers TOTALLY abused it, dropped it, drop-kicked it, bounced it -- they'd say it wasn't their fault because "you didn't pack it properly."
The cost of shipping is only one part of the expense. You need to figure in the cost of overkill packaging and damaged goods too.

I know of at least one instance where a box was packed BY a UPS employee in FULL compliance with the written letter of their own instructions, double boxed, two inches between the wall of one box and the wall of the other box, nothing loose or rattling, everything really well protected.....and it got destroyed by UPS in shipping and they denied the claim.
UPS DOES NOT PAY CLAIMS. That is almost 100 percent the case.
I have to ship out some bare tubes today. I've TESTED the packing system I'm using by throwing it off the roof with a dud tube
inside, and no harm came to the tube.
I'm still totally unsure if they'll arrive intact or not.

I sold an FW900 monitor to some guy and used FedEx to ship it. FedEx packed it up and shipped it and it arrived in pieces. Took me a month of fighting to finally get them to honor my claim. Guess I was lucky. Still irritated that the monitor didn't survive though. It was a pristine example with very little usage. A+ for sure.

Give a UPS agent three steel balls the size of bowling balls, and lock him in empty, round, cornerless vault with no windows, no vents, and just the one solid door, for an hour.
Inside of that hour he'll lose one ball, break the second, and the third will end up pregnant.

I use USPS exclusively. I do get one box damaged a year roughly, but at least USPS pays out claims. Not so for UPS and FedEx.

I know right? I almost cried when I found out it was damaged beyond repair. Wanted to march down to FedEx and give them the biggest ass-chewing in the world. But it wouldn't have done any good. No one knows or cares about CRT anymore so it would have fallen on deaf ears.

FedEx smashed one of my JVC DILA's. I didn't keep the shipping box and lost out on the ability to make a claim. I had to pony up to the seller to buy more parts to fix it. That sucked!!
When I ship anything now I go nuts with the packaging. Double walled, double boxed, stooopid amounts of bubble wrap. So far so good.

Pity we cannot use "Caution! Live ordinances" stickers on shipping boxes.... maybe they'd be a little more careful.
I'm probably on a few lists already for being "outspoken" so another forum key word post won't matter.
