About ten years ago I had a HTPC setup driving a VPL-W400Q projector, which needs a 1080i HDTV resolution. It was working fine years ago, but I have not had such a set up in a long time. Recently I decided I want to set this system up again, but I don't remember much of anything about getting the custom resolution working. And, most of the web sites I used to use as a guide are no longer on line.
Anyway, does anyone have any pointers, recommendation or links to info I can use to get a 1080i (or derived) resolution out of a geforce MX440 graphics card? Preferably running a Linux distro, but I don't mind installing WinXP, 98SE or whatever. Right now I'm running XP with Forceware 93.81 driver, but this driver doesn't seem to take the custom resolution I've set up using PowerStrip.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction here...

WinXP should be fine that's what I did all my testing with way back when.
Have a look here it may help. http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19652
Also is you have an old version of the video driver that may help too. Not sure when but I remember people complaining about a driver update that "broke" the older Nvidia cards and custom resolutions wouldn't work.

get CRU, custom resolution utility. You might want to build a custom monitor driver with phoenix. "Restart" is a handy tool to reset the graphic card to default settings.
I use these tools with AMD graphic cards an Vista / Win7 to watch 1080i, but mainly 1560*720p50 and 2340/1080p48 for my awkward screen aspect ratio. 1920*817p48 works fine too.

It's been a while but if I recall right; I had to setup a custom monitor file *.INF through PowerStrip. Load that into the OS. This defines the max resolution and scan rates. Without it the video card would only accept standard timings.
Then I setup desktop shortcuts to load specific resolutions and timings.
Its all on the PowerStrip site.
