I just purchased a marquee 9500LC ultra production date December 2010 model #9518LC. Are there any improvements I can do before I mount it on the ceiling?

Hi,
Why calibrate anything before hanging on the ceiling?
The setup will be done after that.
I'd verify that there are no glycol leaks and everything works well.
Probably no big thing on a 5 year old machine, but no one knows..
You'd probably have to remove the tubes and power supplies to hang it up.
Just because of the weight.
I'd verify that there are the 6 pole astig rings installed. If you want to use frankenyokes or other astig rings, install them
before putting the tubes back into the projector.
Think about colored C-elements (red and green), too.
If you don't want to hassle with C-elements (which is not the easiest job and not the cheapest),
there are two possibilities.
- From my experiences, uncorrected projectors look much better on silver screens. It kind of improves the colors.
I don't have an explanation, but i've seen it myself on my Marquee.
- Use color filter gels like rosco filters. They are cheap and can be mounted in front of the lenses, but some people
say that sharpness decreases minimal if you use them.
I'd think about fan modifications. In my projectors, i use a home grown temp-controlled fan board
and better fans in other places than stock.
It is more work than just putting other fans into the chassis, but well worth the effort if you want it quiet.

Boards are easy to access if on the ceiling. And modding boards is a never ending story.
So if you want to mod everything before mounting, you'll never mount it.

I am fine with that. But he should at least test it for some hours on the ground, check for glycol leaks
and think about if he wants / needs to do something about color filtering, bellows or tubes itself.
If everything works well there is no reason against hanging to the ceiling immediately.
I would not care about board mods at all. The can be done later.
But i think that these things normally go without saying. I only wrote about these because he says he is new
into CRT projectors. It is sure the best idea to set raster width and height and do a coarse mechanical setup when
on the ground. Check that the lenses work with the desired picture size and measure throw distance.
Make sure you hang it center and square to the screen!

Good points. Also use it unmodified for some time so you get to know it, if it drifts, if it is noisy at what contrast it blooms etc. So you know if mods are doing something or making something worse. Nothing wrong with a standard 9500. Most people would love it just like it is.

Julian,
I agree he should test it on the ground. You should always test the pj on the floor before mounting it on the ceiling. My reply was in reference to doing any mods.
