watched this last night, excellent movie, true sci-fi and everything it's supposed to be (i.e. not Star Wars). One of those movies that really touches on high art in a film form.

Absolutely agree, this movie is fantastic.

I find it funny however that some see this film as a feminist power film. Personally I think those folks are confusing a robot that looks like a woman with a woman.

If you haven't seen this movie yet you must see it. I've watched it three times.

I agree, one of the best movies I have watched in a while great story, characters and tension and a perfect finale. I watched this and under the skin on the same weekend and both are top shelf sci fi.

Well, I thought Ex MAchina was excellent and Under the Skin was sh*t... but in Under the Skin at least you got to see Scarlett Johansson in the nude so it was almost worth it Wink

Ex MAchina is nothing like Mad Max so I don't know. I couldn't finish Mad Max. Ex MAchina requires thinking and Mad Max requires complete suspension of disbelief.

To me its was just a very weird thought process that came up with this story line. At one stage I thought I need to send my daughter out of the room before it turns pornographic. To me it was just a very strange movie / story. I wife is a big Sci-Fi fan and she didn't think much of it either.

As for an alternative, I don't get the question. Its not something you have to watch, but if you don't you will need a replacement.

We just watched Run All Night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wanted to get a sense of what you enjoy, it sounds like action movies beat out sci fi..?
Ex Machina is a morality play and character study, and just a repackages version of the "Pinocchio" story for a new generation.

feminist power film? Confused wow, the movie had absolutely nothing to do with feminism. Talk about the most possibly confused and ignorant interpretation possible. The shallowness of some peoples consciousness is just astounding, really makes you realize how differently we're progressing up the evolutionary ladder. I mean their were lines of dialogue and themes in this movie that you could spend half a semester discussing in Philosophy class. One of my faves, ( paraphrase)" one day they will look back on us the same way we look at Cro-magnon man, a semi intelligent ape that made itself extinct"

LOL, how can someone like both these movies and then use words like "ignorant f*ck" to describe someone who doesn't. I hope he was 100% joking. UTS was a tough movie to get into, just like you need to turn your brain off completely to watch mad max, you have to enter and almost meditative state to watch UTS. I found myself annoyed at the beginning, and almost turned it off. I felt my anxiety growing that is wasn't "going anywhere", but then just sat back and relaxed, decided the to trust the producer and the actors. By the half-way point, I was totally engrossed. I mean there were some pretty heavy themes here, like human empathy, which even humans have in different capacities. The scene at the beach really pulled me in, as Scarlett was watching this tragedy unfold and was completely detached, that's when I knew something was really off with her, and when she clubbed the only remaining survivor over the head and drug him off then it was certain you were dealing with something non-human.

it's a hard movie to understand Greg, but that doesn't make it "a weird thought process", it was actually a brilliant thought process. Hard for me to imagine a hard-core sci-fi fan not liking it. Just to be clear, there's a huge difference between sci-fi and fantasy. Fantasy is lord of the Rings, Star wars (Lord of the rings in space), and other such stuff which involves improbable things like magical powers , monsters, elves, or Sith lords. That's all fine and I like that stuff too, Pure Sci-fi deals with things that have a very high probability of happening, like an AI that will replace us some day. This theme is not new, and Kubriks last film dealt with it too. AAMOF, after watching this I came to realize that extinction is not our greatest probability, but replacement is. We are SO close to building something greater than ourselves, as in just a few decades out from our first fully functional cyborg with skin, eyes, a superior brain with no problems like the human brain has, etc.

looks like we're the only 2 who liked both exmachina and under the skin but Pinochio? Really ? Laughing
closer to Frankenstein i think

BTW, for those who like exmachina, the mirror to this is a movie called Automata with Antonio Banderas, not as good but still worth watching

One thing I find myself doing when I see a movie I really connect with is looking for other movies by the same director, anyone see Sunshine ?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/?ref_=nm_knf_i4

looks like a good flick, although as usual, the totally worthless netflix search and recommendation "engine" has never even mentioned it

Interesting little trivia, Eva from Exmachina is also his daughters name .

I didn't really like Sunshine... hard to not say why without spoiling it though. I don't think it would meet your definition of sci-fi above due to some weirdness. I think without the weirdness it would have been a fantastic movie. It is visually stunning especially on CRT though.

I thought about buying the Blu-ray. Apparently the American version only got a 3.7/5 for video quality (UK got 4/5). Is that because there is something something deliberate in the movie stylization that brought down the review quality of the BD?

I don't think it says much about evolution, but it definitely says something about most people's understanding of (and interest in) deep subjects like artificial intelligence. Any way you look at it, pretty esoteric stuff. You were right that the film bordered on high-art. As such, I'm not surprised it wouldn't enjoy mass appeal.

I can confirm you could easily spend half a semester discussing the themes in this movie, because I actually spent a semester (an entire semester) discussing the themes in this movie.

I was 19 going on 20, it was the last-half of my second year, and a buddy of mine and I found this awesome philosophy class in the catalog when we were getting registered for spring semester: Artificial Intelligence. It was a 500-level graduate philosophy class, so the system wouldn't even let us even register for it. Dammit!

Not wiling to let a stupid phone registration system stand in our way, we went and stalked the professor on campus to see if we could be admitted somehow. We were both WAY into computers and already had a good basic understanding of AI, so had a fun 30-minute discussion in his office talking about Turing, computers, processing power, sentience and soul. The meeting was great and we all joked that we should have had the discussion over beers. Wink He had to wait a week or so to make sure the class didn't fill up (it wasn't even close), and then we were admitted.

We spent that entire semester digging into everything we could as it related to artificial intelligence: Biology, psychology, technology and ethics. The syllabus was amazing, and the class was totally riveting. I think there are only half a dozen college classes that I enjoyed anywhere near as much as that class, and that includes core classes specific to my major.

Bottom line, this movie *really* scratched this itch. The movie was like an intro to artificial intelligence, though unless you've thought a lot about the subject before, you'd probably miss a lot of the really deep philosophical questions the film exposes.

We just watched it this weekend, and it absolutely gets two enthusiastic thumbs-up from me. It's truly probably one of the best science-fiction movies I've seen in years; definitely in my top-ten all-time favorite sci-fi movies... Probably top-five. It *really* left an impression. My wife generally isn't a big fan of sci-fi unless it's really well-done, and she liked it almost as much as I did.

WanMan! What up? I watched the iTunes rental, and on a temp screen in my living room, so I can't say anything about the BD. But, nothing in particular stuck out to me that would have caused problems, and I would have guessed the Blu-ray was excellent. Most of the movie is set in the interior of an ultra-modern home, and much of it in a basement with artificial lighting. Maybe the reviewer was distracted and focused less on the look of the BD and more on the look of the film itself or something.

I took one semester of Philosophy in community college as well, my favorite classes, even more than Poly-Sci. It covered the basics though, Aristotle, Plato, etc.

AI was a movie that Kubric started and I think Spielberg finished that dealt with the same themes As ExMach. If you haven't seen it I won't spoil the end for you but the overall premise of these movies is the same , that human beings are capable of creating a from of life that will replace us. That we as species will never evolve to the point of actually embracing and achieving the ideals we strive for and, as a result, the underlying implication being that we will eventually make ourselves extinct .

This one really bothers me, maybe it wouldn't it I didn't have 2 sons , but it does and I reject it.

In Ex-machina it's revealed that the machines become masters of mimicking human behavior, that all the things we think make us "special " can be copied and used against us. In effect , the Robots are the perfect Socio-paths and like a Corporation, they never grow old , or sick, and never die, they are theoretically immortal. So do we even try to make them function at the same level of thinking and autonomy as humans?

The obvious answer is no to both, Corporations are not people and neither are machines and they are actually a huge danger to human society. A lot of very prominent minds have already brought this up recently, Elon Musk being one. A quick search found another show from the UK called " Humans"
Anyone seen this?

I did the exact same thing with a literature class meant for English majors. Stalked the teacher for three days straight before he directed me to stand in the back of the classroom until a 'major' dropped the class. I got in and thoroughly enjoy the Modern Science Fiction Literature class.

Of the ~24 books I had to read, I had already read 18 of them. Got an A in the class my last paper I had to turn in was on the topic of Robophobia. Teacher loved it!!! We often got into long discussions outside of class and I think he found a fellow lover of the subject.

I wonder about the reviewer of the BD. Usually they take an agnostic approach, but read it for yourself:
