Just updated a Dell E510 with an ATi 5450 1GB video card and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. 32Bit
(3Ghz HT, 3GB RAM)

Occasionally when waking from standby, the video will flash, screen will come back, go out, come back etc...

Do I have a bad video card or is this Linux problem. After a power down/reboot it's been fine for hours.

EDIT: added card model

Amd problem probably. I yank my 5770 from my system when I use Ubuntu. I prefer the Intel graphics on my Sandy Bridge processor. I did use a Geforce 240 card for awhile as well and preferred that over the AMD as well.

To be honest, I really don't like my AMD card on Windows either. I only use it for gaming.

On a slight tangent, what is up with card pricing? I looked on CL recently and it looks like old cards are still going for high prices. I bought my 5770 like 3 1/2 years ago for $70. Based on some of the CL pricing, I could sell it for roughly what I paid for it.

Strange isn't it? 1GB XFX 5450 $30 shipped. My1999 VooDoo card probably worth $400

Are you running the ATI proprietary drivers or the built-in ones? I have almost exactly the same setup and it happens for me too. Switching to console from X or from XBMC to X will stop the flashing and bring the picture back.

Built in ones. What are you running?

I'm tempted to RMA this card and get a 6450 with a fan instead but I wonder if it happens with all the ATi cards?
Should I go with a Nvidia 720 or something similar? The sticking point is the 300 watt PS in this Dell

Proprietary ones. On Debian it was a big hazzle including compiling a new kernel but from what I could find on the internets, it should be very easy on Ubuntu. Anyhow, it's not flawless with the proprietary ones but better.

Come to think of it, my other box is ATI 5450 with XBMCbuntu 14 or 15 = Ubuntu 14.something. No issues there but IIRC the driver is a preinstalled proprietary on that too.

I kept the card. I got a DVI-I to VGA adaptor. Stopped using the top VGA port and used the DVI port.
Wakes up and the picture doesn't flash.
Weird! But that's my work around.

Also tried to do the enter Kodi/console and exit but when the flashing starts is locks the system up.
