I've wanted an SSD drive for some time for my PS3, HTPC and laptop. However I see the rate of warranty returns with some of these and I balk at them.

Who makes the best ones?

In desktop size and 1.8 inch?

I've had a Kingston in my HTPC for about 2 years. It's worked perfect so far...I was actually skeptical but I thought I would try one anyway. So far so good...I think it's only 60GB but that was big enough because I don't use the HTPC for anything other than playing movies stored on a media server.

I have 2 Kingston 64Gb,
and 3 OCZ-Agility3's, 60Gb and 120Gb.

All are good after 3 years.

Cheers

The OCZ 60Gb is my download computer, it runs 24/7.

The OCZ 120Gb is in my Alienware laptop, used 3 to 4 times a week.

Kingston in my Wife's work laptop, 64Gb used everyday, shutdown only when taking on business,

The last OCZ 60Gb and Kingston 64Gb are in 2 laptops that get only used once or twice a week.

Hope that helps.
Cheers

I will not do business with OCZ. They made bad memory and then went out of the RAM business. How convenient.

Hi,

Our notebooks at work (actually the one I'm writing this with) are equipped with Crucial M4 series SSDs. The first one was mounted about one year ago. None of the ~25 disks has failed since and users are very satisfied with its performance, especially regarding speed and battery running time. If I had to equip a desktop system I'd simply use an adapter bracket...

Regards,

I just bought a Samsung 830 128GB last week for $69 from Newegg. Samsung usually has the least negative feedback.

I installed Kubuntu on it and haven't noticed a huge difference like I was led to believe. Boot time is quicker, but so what?

OCZ Petrol - run away, very very fast.... But I've been using Agility 3 and Agility 4 128gb drives in my 2 desktop machines for months now and they have been fast & stable. Running Windows 7 Ultimate on one machine and Windows 8 Pro on the other.

I purchased a Petrol, it died on its 3rd boot-up, sent it into OCZ, and they sent back the Agility 3 with an acknowlegement about the Petrol's problems.

I currently buy the plextor m5pro 128 GB. About three times the random IOPS compared to a similar intel. Even the more expensive intel models perform less than the plextor one.

You could also opt for a SLC drive, SuperSSpeed makes one, which is kinda special. Even the SAS2 enterprise SSDs use MLC memory.
http://www.supersspeed.com/ it's the SLC301 model.
Mtron is out of business, and the transcend SLCs are old models.

I found out that there's only one company that still makes the 1.8 inch SSD drives. SO I guess I'll be going with one of those for my Mini Net book.

What company, transcend?

Don't know about 1.8 inch, that's not used with an msata connection, is it?

Two Samsung 840 250GB and one 840 Pro 256GB SSDs in my music DAW computer. I'll eventually add one more. I haven't had them long enough to know how dependable they are, but from what I've read they're suppose to be really good.

I don't know what mini netbook drive you're trying to replace but...I researched replacing a PATA SSD in a mini netbook some time back and discovered that the connector*(appeared to be an mSATA or mPCIE), while appearing standard, was actually proprietary, and any replacement drive had to be made ESPECIALLY for the mini netbook. This severely limited the choice of drive manufacturer, and made the cost to replace the drive far more than the netbook was worth...just saying...measure twice, cut once....
