Not right now I'm not. Buddy pulled the screen down, then ran home. Right now my contrast ratio is infinity, because there's no screen to reflect off of. Smile

More pix and work tomorrow though.

Yes, absolutely! I am hoping to get started on those next week. I want the room to be sort of like Cliff's.. completely black, although the g/f wants a more homey touch to it.. but in dark fabric. I am sure I won't get the room as black as Cliff's place, but Barb likes Craig's HT, so I think that's what we're aiming for.

The bass in the room is a mess as posted either earlier here or in another thread, so once all the new equipment is assembled, I'll start doing a bass crawl to find out the problem areas.

Screen is UP! didn't take much, have a small wrinkle in the top left corner that will mostly be covered by trim. Have to refocus/reconverge as the screen is now about 2" closer to the projector, but not a big deal.

Closeup shot of the speakers as well. Now to vacuum the carpet and get to wiring everything up!

Total black has terrible WAF / GFAF, and personally I don't care for it either. Plenty of other dark colors will work well, and if they're dark enough there will be almost no significant reflection or color issues. I painted mine a dark purple with gold veining (and deep purple carpet) and it's beautiful. Even my mother-in-law said it was gorgeous. Others have done well with dark blue & similar. I'd take that over black any day, even if it's not 100% "correct."

I managed to get the stack realigned quickly last night, even 2" movement of screen is a PITA. I'm at an average throw distance. There's a bit of tube wear, and I'm not running the sets hard at all, so I wanted to be within the tube wear area, and am for the most part, save for a tiny strip on one projector down the left side. Not visible unless you REALLY look for it.

I finally am running 5.1 properly, need two more amp channels for the front surrounds, and will tie in the rear surrounds this afternoon. Ran the Pioneer calibration program again, and watched Trainspotting and a Frank Zappa 4:3 video from 1985 I think called Baby Snakes. video was awful quality, but the sound was amazing. I am finally hearing surround the way it should be heard.

Turns out one amplifier channel for the subs is intermittent, so I was 'only' running two 15" subs out of 1 cabinet, not two. Considering the whole room is on 1 15 amp breaker incl the two projectors, there's no point in cranking it.

Work has slowed down, so I am hoping for almost 2 weeks of downtime to list stuff on ebay, relax a bit, and work on the HT and the rest of the house. Will post more pix and comments as things progress.

Also one step I'm not looking forward to is to change out the whole controller tray on one projector to see if I can correct the drift. That means full re-setup of 1 projector. that's a good 4-5 hours...

1 box with 2 15s in it. Will repair the other sub amp channel today, then I'll run 2 cabinets with 4 woofers total. Smile 98db efficiency should rock the house nicely!

Hate to be the bad guy again, but

with a band filtered noise ain't woth much for infrasound performance. Typical PA subs are tuned at 40 Hz whereas you want extension down to 20 Hz. Anyway, you will have some kick ass sound performance for rock music.

Cheers

No screen shots! Nowhere near ready yet! I suck at taking pictures, and unless it's clearly defined test patterns, I've always found screen shots to be a waste of time.. for me anyway.

A minor update... building the frames to house the insulation which will be covered in matte black cloth. The first idea was to cover the front and back of the frames with chicken wire to house the insulation, but it's uneven, and will be seen through the cloth. Turns out the insulation sits perfectly, without falling out, so we may use small sections of 1 X 1 to hold them in place, and only put the chicken wire on the backside of the vertical frames.

Will cover all walls and ceiling area with similar, although not every panel will have insulation in it. No need for too much sound absorption as others have said, as a too-dead room sounds as bad as a too live one. Will experiment with that.

The screen frame was mounted forward a bit from the wall, so the panels will be flush with the screen. The material will show up next week, so I'll post more pix. We're buying 2 X 2s like they're going out of style.

the bottom side panel will be removable for access to the speakers if they ever need servicing, although the screen and frame would have to come out if a sub ever has to be taken out. (easy to remove the screen frame without damage to the screen).

More shots to come when the material shows up.

And a bit more progress. Bought all the wood (56 lengths of 2 X 2, 8' long) to build the ceiling and wall samples. The cloth is slow in getting here, so we can't order more until the stuff for around the screen shows up, but we're ready for it when it does arrive.

The panels are simple enough as shown. Made of 2 x2s, some will be full of insulation, covered with black fabric. Will do all around the screen, the entire ceiling and most of the walls. Fireplace will stay as is for now, but we'll have to do something about the hideous 1980s gold trim, which you can't see in this picture.

The windows and sliding door will most likely just be covered by heavy curtains. That's up to the g/f.

So one side of the roxul looks like stacked cardboard on edge? What is the stuff in the openings that looks like stacked cardboard? Is that the cloth over your speakers?
