I have a marquee 8500 that I got from Curt many years ago. It works great, except it has refused to shut down completely the last few times I have used it. When I power off the machine, the tubes go dark and the light on the back panel switches from green to amber, but the belly fans are still running. Any ideas?

Are you sure its not the LVPS fans running.?

I'm pretty sure it's running fine, you're always supposed to hear the power supply fans run. they run at 1/2 speed, or some reduced speed even when the set is powered down.

If it turns out that it's really the belly fans spinning, the problem could either be related to the CLM (not being able to control the power state of the LVPS correctly) or the LVPS (not responding to the CLM correctly). Try to swap one and/or the other if You have working spares...

In my 14 years doing finicky HT stuff I have Never found noise coming from any belly fan, noooo. It is the cheesy lvps units. Order the fan noise mod here and I'll take care of it.

A few more details... Maybe I shouldn't say belly fans- When I turned off the projector, the fans remained at their louder state instead of ramping down. Tim, I have had your fan mod on my wish list, but it has not made it far enough up the queue yet! Also there was less clicking going on as I guess switches were not switching off. It is like the pj is going into the standy mode. The first time it happened, I thought it was just me. After enjoying a movie (and a couple martinis) I shut everything down and thought the pj sounded loud for being turned off, but the tubes were dark, so I unplugged the machine and didn't think much of it. The next time I watched something, everything went fine.

Last night, when I shut down the marquee, it did the same thing. I unplugged it and posted my question here. I then went back and plugged the machine in and it went right back to this 'standby state.' I could here the tubes crackling, but no picture until I hit the power button. The picture came on just fine, but the projector wouldn't shut all the way down when I pressed the power button. I unplugged it and went to bed. This morning, I plugged back in and everything sounded correct. I powered the pj on and off with no problem.

Maybe it is related, but my viewing habits changed at the first of the year. Instead of viewing 3-4 times a week, I was only turning on the pj once every couple of weeks and I started unplugging it after I shut it down. I thought maybe it would be better for the machine. Maybe not! Anyway, that is what I know and have observed.

Your lvps may be outputting +390vdc, powering the high voltage, when it shouldn't. A stuck relay perhaps. I have seen this once before. The +390 is near inaccessible by voltmeter without extender harnesses or soldering a wire inside the hvps to allow a measurement. You need a different lvps and maybe the fan mod also. I would have to study the bulkhead harness and see what wires go between the two AMP connectors to enable tapping in to measure. The proof for that would be to hear high voltage crackle sound when plugging in the power cord.

I found a lvps in my basement that I had saved from a marquee i had gotten dirt cheap off of ebay. I think that may be the only part that worked off that pj! I opened it up, dusted it out, then installed it. Everything powered up AND down. Smile

Much queter, also. I haven't checked the heater voltage yet. I will get to that very soon. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
