Sony 1272 crt with Switcher. RGBVH cables.

I want to hook up my vhs player. I use a Direct tv HD receiver Model H20

I have one set of Red Blue Green plugs on thedirect tv receiver going to the switcher (I use a rgbvh box & breakout cable)
And another going to my stereo for sound.

How would I connect to the direct tv box with my vcr so I can record & playback?
I see a S video jack on both, would that work?

Thank You

Do you have the line doubler module installed?

IN short, I don't think you can. What you'll need to do is get an external line doubler or scaler to convert the composite to RGBHV, and then feed the output of the line doubler to an RGB input of the switcher.

Can you not burn your VHS tapes to DVD and then play them in a DVD or BluRay player?

Yep. Or, you could just get a new AV receiver like I was telling you about in another thread, and not use the Sony switcher for switching at all. In addition to all the other benefits I've mentioned (HDMI switching to the Moome card, better audio from Blu-ray, modern codecs), you also get a scaler - not just a line-doubler.

One wrinkle is that you can't go cheap, though… You'll need more of a mid-range model because you'll need the AVR to up-convert composite or s-video. Since you don't need 3D, you could go with a higher-end 2-3 year-old model and get lots of value that way. I'm sure we could find something as a refurb or used on AVS.

it would Take me years to copy everything.

I have a dvdo Iscan 2 I use for my video game with a rgbvh break out cable that goes to the switcher. I could plug the vcr into that.

I'm trying to figure out how the cables route first.

Like does the direct tv antenna cable go to the vcr first or the direct tv box? then which out/in cables go where.

No, Larry… The VCR won't have any antenna connection to it anymore; it's analog tuner is essentially useless since the digital transition some years ago.

To record DirecTV, you'll just connect the s-video and red/white audio cables from the DirecTV receiver (out) to the VCR (in).

To play back your recordings, you'll plug the VCR into the DVDO iScan just like your old video game system.

I can understand wanting to watch some of your old recordings - say, family stuff or personal video - but, why would you want to record HD to VHS? You'll throw away about 80% of the quality by recording it to VHS. It'll look terrible played back - especially the older stuff.

You know you can just get a DVR from DirecTV, right Larry? Wink

Seriously, if I could only watch from VHS, I'd rather not watch at all.

Just call DirecTV and have them send you a DVR to replace the older H20. That, or you can probably find an HR22 or something on Craiglist for $50, get a card from DirecTV and record and playback to your heart's content.

Ok then I'd suggest the cheapest/easiest way. Get an S-video cable and plug the VCR directly into the S-video port on the projector and revel in the glorious 480i scan lines.

I'm not paying them $10 a month to record a show. Like I say I seldom record anything.
I'm looking at getting rid of cable,

Good grief, I'm not the only person who has old tapes and wants to watch them once in awhile. I have a good vcr & want to use it from time to time .
Buying a dvr makes no sense & I don't want one. I wouldn't record enough to make it worth the money.

Gotcha. I would have gotten rid of satellite long ago if I didn't have a DVR. It's literally the only way I can stand to watch live TV anymore, so practically everything I watch is recorded. To me, the price with DVR is the only price I'd pay; it's either that or zero.

We may cut the cord soon too. I've been easing my wife into it lately. I'm thinking another year or so, and I'll pull the plug. There are a few TV shows I'll HATE waiting until I can get it online, but I'll survive for the vacation we can take every year with the savings.

It's not that bad. Especially on a 1252

Why are we talking about running a 25-foot s-video cable to watch 480i when Larry already said he has an iScan? Just plug the VCR into the iScan and be done with it.

oops missed that part. Distracted over here.

So Larry, connect as follows:

Direct TV box, leave all dish connections as is. Connect the S-video cable and L+R red/white audio cables to your VCR's inputs.
Connect your VCR's S-video output to your iScan. Connect the L+R audio to your SONY's input card.
Connect the RGBHV output from the iScan to your SONY switcher's input card.

Ok Thanks. Got it hooked up. I can play a tape fine. But for some reason when I record now, I don't get any sound when I play it back.
I have audio hooked up to my stereo in video 2 jack. there's sound when I record, just not on playback. Maybe the direct tv box isn't connected right? I need to play with it more.
