Wondering what everyone's first projector was that got you into this hobby/business?
Mine was a 1978 Advent Video Beam Model 710 --with a 6ft screen. State of the art at the time. Cost me $2500 which was a fortune back then.
Lasted a long time, sure got my money's worth out of it!

First was a PG9, but I never installed it. The idiot seller shipped it in a cardboard box with styrofoam peanuts, and it was trashed.
Then I spotted 5 XG852s being sold an hour away, and bought them with Curt. I picked up & shipped, and got pick of the litter.
The XG drove me crazy (I think it had misadjusted internal pots so it was impossible to get right) so I got an 8500.
Wanted something smaller/quieter, so I got a Dwin. It was silent and cute, but I didn't like the soft ES focus.
So I put the 8500 back up.
Then I found a local G70. Put it up and futzed with it for a while before giving up -- it had issues. Sold it to Curt.
Put the 8500 back up again and that's what I've had for the last 5 years.

Barco Data, circa... 1988? Came out of the local.. ahem.. porno theatre, where it chalked up countless hours to the point where the tubes were pretty dead. I got it for free when I installed a new 801s with a $4000 Inline line doubler (but didn't sell the unit, we only did the install). To get more life out of the tubes, I put the CRTs on an adjustable power supply and boosted the filament to 8 volts. I had that thing for.. 3 years maybe? Wasn't home much, so it really didn't get used a lot. I did learn about analog Barco setup though.
Next was a Sony 7220, converted to flat screen use. Came out of a rental company. I bought 6 of them, flipped 5 of them for $1500 each installed to sports bars, kept one of them.
Then came an Ampro 1500, the analog predecessor to the 2000. Then a 9 PG with point board. I retubed it, and used that for years.

My 9500LC; bought it as an 8500LC with fried tubes from Cinemasource in 2000 for $1,500. Then I retubed it with 9" (twice now) and the rest is history.

Started at AVS forum, too much Bull SH@T there,
went to The Evil Twin Forum which was great fun, until Nicholas ran out of time to maintain after a hacker destroyed the database.
Then "Here" was born, been here ever since.
Nec MT810 LCD,
Sanyo XP21 LCD,
Sony 1020QM CRT,
Marquee 8111+ bought from Curt,
Marquee 9500 which I sold, still running,
Marquee 9500 with my modifications, currently packed away unfortunately.
Sony D50, now donated to a friend,
Epson EMP-TW600 in my workshop.
Now using Epson EH-TW8100
Cheers

In 2010 found a NEC 9PG xtra in a junk bin, it had great tubes, but turned out it had some serious problem with the deflection board, then bought a 6PG xtra to cannibalize the deflection board, this had quite usable tubes too, sold the 9PG xtra, then bought a Marquee 7500 and sold soon after I restored my parts 6PG xtra in fully working order, now this 6PG xtra is upgraded to a 9PG xtra.

Sony VPH-1044Q, followed by an InFocus ScreenPlay 4800, then I got an NEC 9pg, which was the last of the CRTs. Acquired a Runco VX1C off ebay for $100, and now using a Sony VPL-VW40 purchased from Jeremy112. After installing a new bulb, it looks fantastic!

Not mine, but my dad's… Also an Advent Videobeam. Not sure of the model, but it wasn't the taller one with the CRTs arranged in a triangle; it was lower, walnut sides with some kind of inlay in the top, and with the typical 3-tube arrangement. The speaker faced forward to bounce off the 6-foot diagonal high-gain curved screen. That was '78 or '79.
In '85 or '86, he put the Advent on a shelf and replaced it with an Infinity Reference Standard Projection Television (RSTV). He and a buddy bought two of them together to get a better price because the damn thing was like $4000 - and that was in 1986 dollars. A little bigger, brighter, more advanced, way sharper and better, complete with geometry and focus controls, but still just 480i. He used that set until probably five or years ago or so when he modernized his theater with HD by going to a digital. It then went to a friend's lake house to the rec room to replace the Advent that was still in service. They're still using it now. Talk about serious money's worth!
It was a Pioneer Laserdisc player and a C-band BUD (big ugly dish) feeding it all. I remember watching MTV right after they started broadcasting, and live concerts with the audio simulcast on FM for stereo w/Dolby ProLogic surround. Ah, those were the days!
So, that all gave me the big bug to do a dedicated home theater. I picked up my first 1271 from Iowa State University Surplus for $750 I think in 2000 or 2001. I'd been lurking on AVS for some time, and finally snagged one. I then bought a 1252, a 1272, and refurbed and flipped a couple of them. Then, I bought a G70 on ebay with problems, and it turned out to be a minty (as in, like new) set with almost no hours on it. Total score. That was probably 2009.
I sold the G70 summer 2012 and switched to a JVC RS45.
In the next house, I will absolutely go scope and audio-transparent. Once you see it, you'll have to have it. It's amazing.
At this point, I can't imagine ever NOT having a front projection setup. I don't care how big the LCD sets get, it's just not the same as a projected image. It's magic. Pop some corn, turn off the lights, turn on the sound, and check out for a few hours. It's my getaway.

I remember the Advent models you mentioned. I think they were the 760 models. Sorta looked like a coffee table. They came after the 710 model. They were nice sets to. More upgrades in them
I still use two advent speakers I bought back then. They still sound fine. They're my front speakers in my 5 speaker set up.

Kloss Novabeam 100
Runco 750
Runco 760W
Marquee 9000
Blended Marquee 9500 Ultras, MP mod'd (many times)
The Novabeam lasted a year (1994). The Runco 750 also lasted a year (1995). The Runco 760W never got installed. It was sitting on the floor in my basement office when I happened upon a Marquee 8000 and Marquee 9000 pair of projectors for sale. I bought the 9000 (1996), installed it on the ceiling, and there it stayed for 10 years, until the "Blend Wars" (TM) began. The blended Ultras have been on the ceiling since 2006, in continuous upgrade mode................... (the simplified version).

Started around 2001.
ECP3100 $300
ECP4500. Free
Screenplay4805....big mistake. Won't even talk about $$$. In storage used for video games occasionally.
Marquee 8500. $1000 with new VDC green. Now in storage as a backup.
PG10 - Free - about 875 hours on tubes. Recapped and up to about 1000 hours a year later.

6PG+ > 1208 > XG135LC
The 1208 is still in storage and my 10 year old son was pointing out that it would make a GREAT projector for his collection of game systems

I remember when you joined looking for a CRT. Your location said Norther VA. I PM'd you and said I'm in Northern VA too, what part. You said Loudoun County. I said me too! What part? You said Purcellville. I said me too! What part? Turns out you were just a few houses down the same street.
You still owe me a BBQ roast as trade for that NEC! You'll just have to travel 2.8 miles to check out my new HT space (still empty)... but the bar is functional.
My first CRT was a ECP3101. Followed by just about everything else.
