Well first of all I bought my first Dune player an HD-Duo and so far I love the features !

As far as using WD 3TB drives you will need Windows 7 to partition the drives and use them. If you buy a WD Green 3TB external drive to remove parking you need to remove the drive from the enclosure to do so and can void the warranty.

If you want to use XP to transfer and create your ISO files my recommendation would be to use WD Green 2TB drives as they do not require changing the partition files from MBR to GPT but you can still get about 2.2TB of usable storage space on the 3TB drives.

I have yet to create an HD DVD iso file that will play using the dune....... Crying or Very sad

I may be wrong, but I don't think Dune supports HD-DVD. However, you can simply rip the HD-DVD movie content to mkv without compression and that will play. Without compression, the video quality will be identical to the original.

By the way, the new Dune Base 3D is out. By most accounts it is rather nice, but they are having some issues with Dolby TrueHD on some BD discs and mkv files. None of the new network media players support BD menus either, so if you don't need 3D the last generation players (smart, Base 3.0, Prime 3, Duo...) are better because they do support full menus.

Dune says the new Prime player that is to be released "second quarter" will support menu playback with BD and also 3D. If they pull it off, they will be the only media player that can do it. Price is supposed to be around $600 for the Prime 3D. If the new Prime 3D actually does what they say it will I will be buying one.

Can you explain how to do this using AnyDVD HD ? Do I just change .iso to .mkv in the file type ?

What is a good program to use for the file conversion from HD DVD and Blu ray to MKV ?

The ideal solution would be a program that includes the ability to also convert ISO to MKV files...

Tom, Google MakeMKV. You can also search the forum here, as there has been much discussion about it, and MikeEby from our very own forum built a nice GUI for it (MakeMKV).

Well Ive tried several options with MakeMKV to copy HD DVD's and the dune always reports "Error:format is not supported" yet it also says it is a 19GB MKV file ? Confused

At this point it is easy to make the MKV files but the Dune always gives the same error that the format is not supported......

I've never hooked a 3TB directly to a Dune.

I use my 3TB drives in my server so they are all run together to make one large single drive that is 15TB.

I've never tried to make an MKV from an HD-DVD so I don't know. However, mkv is just a "container" so the actual video format contained in the container may not be compatible with Dune. You may need to convert the video from whatever it is to something like h.264.

I'd do some googling on the HD DVD / MKV / Dune issue. HD DVD is very, very similar to Blu-ray as far as the actual video streams; same H.264/MPEG-4, same MPEG-2, and same VC-1. I bet it's something simple like an extra audio track or something you can strip out of the MKV, perhaps.

I would like to say that TeraCopy works VERY well for transferring ISO files from one drive to another !

As for HD DVD to MKV playing in a Dune I think it's a lost cause. Crying or Very sad

Well that is of course unless the Dune engineers get off their A$$ and take a stab at it.... MKV support should include HD DVD as it was the only other player in the format war for HD !

No you must first convert it to an MKV file for the Dune to play it. The Dune will not play HD DVD ISO files just BD and DVD ISO files. Try MakeMKV for the conversion...

I started on that project again last night. I removed and reloaded MakeMKV rechecked all the settings in AnyDVD and success at last ! I copied the complete set of the Matrix series in HDDVD and it just worked.... Thumbs Up

I have a feeling the Oppo 93 will be seeing little use from now on.

After another half day of testing MakeMKV seems to be hit or miss with HD DVD. Unforgiven and the Matrix Reloaded failed after testing. I think I need to try a different MKV file converter program. Any suggestions ?
