|
|
Hello,
I have a HDQ which ouputs 1080i@72 to my BG808. It works fine.
I now have a Radiance XD and I am not able to do the same thing even if I put the exact same timings values (except the clock rate not given by the HDQ). If I use Menu 0 4, I only have the choice between 50 and 60Hz when on the HDQ, I can enter any values for the vertical refresh rate.
I don't understand what is going wrong.
Thanks for your help.

The HDQ can only do 1080p@72Hz through the RGBHV output. If you we were using the digital DVI on the HDQ than you were not actually doing 72Hz even if the Lumagen reported 72Hz.
The XD, like the HDQ, cannot do 1070P72Hz through the digital output (and obviously it has no analog out). Only the Radiance PLUS models can run 1080P72Hz and higher.

My bad, I was looking at your thread on my iphone so the screen was small and I missed that. I am not sure if the Radiance supports 1080i 72Hz, but try this:
Menu > Output > Custom Modes > (choose a mode #) Mode > Select Mode > 1080i 60Hz
Then go to :
Menu > Output > Custom Modes > (same mode # as above) Mode > Timing > Mode Timing
Then under "CLOCK" put this value: 88931868
That is the frequency in Hz to run 1080i at 72Hz with stock timings.
Let me know if it works!

Thanks Craig, I have a picture now but not correctly recognized by my BG808.
It displays as 28KHz 48Hz. How it can be ok on my HDQ and not on my Radiance, it still is a mystery ?
I don't have a clue how timings work (porch, active,...).
Why Lumagen does not offer a simple modification of the resolution with the vertical refresh rate in addition to the more complicated timings settings as it was on the HDQ ?

On the radiance you need to go into service menu mode for the timings to be adjustable I think.

Did you do the part where I suggested selecting the standard 1080i resolution from the Lumagen menu first BEFORE entering custom timings? You must do this to set the Radiance to interlaced.
Is your Radiance reporting that it is sending 1080i 72Hz after you followed my instructions? My Radiance said 1080i 72Hz on the first status screen (OK button once).
The refresh rate cannot be specified directly in the Radiance because of software limitations. That is why you must enter the clock rate instead. It really doesn't make any difference to the end results though. If you haven't already, download my clock calculator and then you can experiment with custom timings if you want to and calculate your own clock rates.
http://www.cir-engineering.com/bin/clock_calc.xls
One reason Lumagen didn't make the refresh rate versus clock rate entry a priority on the Radiance was because the Radiance only has HDMI outputs, and at the time of the design Jim didn't think many folks with CRT would be interested in the Radiance. I know he told me that years ago and I called him out on it about a year and a half ago... He never remembers saying that about CRT Obviously you will almost never need custom timings on a digital projector so...

Yes I did set the 1080i@60 first, then change the clock value. The Radiance displays correctly the 1080i@72 in the custom mode.
But something must be different from my HDQ settings. Maybe something outside the timings settings (EDID, hotplug,...).
I don't know which parameter can make the Barco thinks that it is 28KHz 48Hz.

My guess is that the problem is with the Radiance software and not with the Barco or Gregg's DVI card...
I suspect that the Radiance is limited to 1080i 50/60Hz and that nobody has ever tried 1080i 72Hz before. What I suggest is that you follow the procedure I outlined to setup 1080i 72Hz. After that, use the Lumagen configuration utility to download the config file from your Radiance to your computer. Then send support@lumagen.com an email asking about 1080i 72Hz. Tell them what you have done to try and set it up and also include the configuration file as an attachment to your email (tell them what the config file is).
Pat might be able to get a fix for you if it's not too much work for him.
Good luck,
craigr

Someone who has a XD + BG808 sent me his configuration file (1080i@96) and I still have 28KHz 48Hz recognized by the 808. I then plugged my HDQ and outputs 1080i@96. It works fine .
It seems that any resolution in the list of the Radiance is ok. I have even tried 720@p120 -> ok with the 808.
But as soon as I change the timings, the resolution and refresh rate are not correctly recognized by the 808.
I sent an email to Randy from Lumagen a few days ago, but no reply at the moment

You are having trouble because you are running interlaced 1080 and not progressive. None of the Lumagen products have ever been very dynamic when it comes to interlaced output modes. The only interlaced resolution they support is 1080i, and technically it is only 1080i 50/60Hz.
Did you send Randy an email or did you send it to support? Randy is not there full time and doesn't work on software design. Send the email to either support or to Pat pharkin@lumagen.com. Pat does the software engineering so he's the guy who will wind up looking at it anyway.

Thanks for the email address. I transfered my previous email to Pat. I hope that he can fix that. I don't want to regret having bought my Radiance XD.

Darn, I hope this works out. Interlaced format is also one of the reasons I bought a Radiance, and assumed it would not give up any modes that the HDQ has. I already have a VXP-based processor in my Anthem pre/pro which I have now bypassed due to lack of custom interlaced formats and added the Radiance after it.
I also got the weird status readout (28Hz etc.) on the Barco but I assumed it was just a quirk of the Barco text, however you are saying it registers correctly with the HDQ...

Unfortunately, it didn't work and it needs to be fixed. So I am waiting for the next firmware.
1080i on the Radiance only accepts 50 or 60Hz

Thank you. I imagine they will have to do some fancy programming. Anthem told me it was a limitation of the VXP chip and they would never support it, so I gave up on them.
Funny thing is, even though the Barco reported strange numbers, I was getting an image when I first tried it. Then I just tried it last night and I get NO image in this mode at all.
I'll send Lumagen support an e-mail so they know there are other users interested in this feature.
PS - you could try 1080p48. It works very nicely for me, but I have the 120MHz Sony tubes.

Well I wrote Lumagen Support and Jim replied stating that 72Hz should work and there is no plan to add 96Hz or any more interlaced formats. Who were you communicating with? I will try the 72Hz tonight since I only tried 96Hz so far.

Looks like 1080i71.93 is working but the Barco reports it wrongly "29.8 kHz / 53 Hz"
I just took the stock 1080i59.94 configuration and changed the Clock to 88931779.
