I built this out of discarded copier parts, not complete yet but getting there. 24 volt motor out of a large capacity paper tray along with the belts and rollers, slide rails from a cassette tray.

Nice...You're going to love a masking system. Even with the great blacks of a CRT it improves the image a lot.

Hey, that's not CIH. How are the horizontal segments fabricated?

Now that's what I call recycling! Nice job.

Have you seen my masking thread?

Mike is right, masking really helps. The best improvement is intra-image contrast... when you have bright and dark areas on the screen. But masking also really helps with bright scenes because the black bars stay invisible.

Thanks guys, the horizontal pieces are 3/16 X 8' laminate board with 1/4" ply on the ends to extend the length and wrapped in black cloth. I have a video of it but not sure how to post on this site. Craig, yours looks great. Cant wait to get mine all cleaned up. Most of my pictures are to large to post here.

Cool. So yours isn't just fabric than? It's more like large boards that just slide up/down to create the mask? That is a pretty cool idea. It wouldn't have worked with my room because I don't have enough space above the screen for an assembly like yours to slide out of the way. But if I did have the space it would have been a really nice way to do it!

I have light walls and ceiling and was stunned by how how "quieting" everything down VISUALLY around the screen made the image itself seem like a window into the projected world...the masking makes the brain then forget about all the black and get into the on-screen. I'm sure 100s of threads exist on this, but I'll just chime in to say to others who haven't done so to make doing so a higher priority...I am.

The wife has been an impediment in this, so I'm dreaming up some sort james bond-like entire wall flips solution. Wink

I love the can-do reuse of materials, too. Thumbs Up

bests,
Matt

Craig, I am using panels instead of rolled fabric. Originally I was going to try the tube with the rolled fabric like you used, but since I have plenty of space above and below my screen I opted for panels. The slide rails I used have bearings in them so they travel smooth and easy. The power supply is out of a barco video switcher that had been sitting in my garage for years. Here is a few more shots.
