If your happy with your PS3 stick with it. Now if you want THE best and have the money to burn then get the Oppo. To quote the great Dragan *ahem* "is a few hundred dollars worth a marginal gain in the image?!"

He gets rid of the ringing but can also output 1080p/48 and 800p/72 which is better for film based material than 1080p/60. Whether that is important depends on the material he watches. The color management system while not as sophisticated as the Radiance is still pretty darn good and a step up from the Marquee's controls. Finally, the HDQ allows him to hook up multiple sources (computer, BD, HD cable, etc.). To say he gets rid of ringing and nothing more really isn't the case. The OP purpose was to get rid of the ringing and the only way to do that is with a VP or HTPC that allows porch timing adjustment. The HDQ is the cheapest way to resolve this issue.
!
that's all true. 2 points though. Without either a pro Cal. or a colorometer, how useful is the color management?
And more importantly

For 1.78/1.85 aspect ratio film based material 1920 x 1080p/72 would be ideal. To achieve that you would need a Lumagen Radiance XS+ ($3K+). The HDQ can output 1920 x 1080p/48 (which is really good) for $225. Both options are better than 1080p/60..[/b]Justin
I think it's important to remeber we're talking about a stock 8500 though. With mod's a 1080P the 8500 will be a little soft at 1080 vertical lines. Without them it's just plain blurry Confused
I like nashes solution for best bang-for bcuk, use the fury to strip the HDCP, and send 1080/24 to the scaler, then manipulate it for the best picture. Some pic quality will be lost with the old F1 but the scaler will help optimisze things.

Draganm - These are indeed very valid elements that I wanted to take into account and serve to influence the decision making process; Will I be requiring professionals for intervention in conjunction with additional mods to the projector.... And, just how much picture quality do I end up losing with nashes solution (use the fury to strip the HDCP, and send 1080/24 to the scaler, then manipulate it for the best picture); Can, and, will the video processor restore the compromise? Thanx Smile

whether or not you should hire a pro calibrator depends on you. The poeple who are really into it, are willing to reard and re-read all the information avaialbale, and really dig deep into the process to fully understand proper colors, electromagnetic focus, and such will be able to squueze a lot of the picture themselves eventually. Most people though fall into the "I just want to watch a big TV" category and hash out a rough set-up, never fully realizing the systems potential. AFA modding/re-conditioning the machine the total chassis hours will determine if it's something you should do sooner or wait and add it as a luxury item a little later.

depends. I've seen the Fury 2 handling 720P and it looked very good. Sending 1080P into the older F1 will result in some of the signal being rolled off, you cn see it in the fuzzy area's at the top/bottom of the scope waveform pics posted earlier.
Nevertheless nash's solution is a good, affordable starting point. I like to do my systems incrementally and enjoy the process vs. just going hog-wild and blowing money.

Others become enthralled in the pursuit of perfection. Stopping at nothing to unlock the true potential of their machines, spending whatever it takes and DOING whatever it takes. In some rare cases they become the machines. Sorry, been listening to swedish black metal since I got to work this morning.

yet again some persue perfection and realize it's unattainable after going broke and never being happy no matter how good things really are. These people either jump off a building or find something else to obsess about like bicycling Laughing
Got fricking dropped and lapped again today GDM it Mad

Draganm - I would certainly entertain a hiring a competent and experienced veteran in this domain, however, finding someone qualified and within my vivinity here has proven to be an enormous challenge..... I do tend to be a bit of a perefectionist but certainly do not want to be a fanatic either since I persoanlly believe that it is self defeating by not allowing to enjoy the machine for what it was intended. And, what did I miss on these Ironman photos - They look really good!
