so I just picked up a fw900 and wouldn't you know it? it doesn't work..... So when I plug it in it goes to turn on fails and tries once more before the yellow standby flashes two or three times... anyone know what that means?

/e
when it goes to turn on "sg901" lights up and I hear what sounds like something shorting.

The sound of something shorting is what has me concerned. You may have to try to find what is causing the sound but keep your hands clear when powering up. Use eyes only.

the part sg901 which resembles a led appears to be arcing and creating the noise. looking into the back of the CRT it lights up blue and it almost looks like its arching from the G1 to something... I hope its not a shorted tube.....

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

I'm not seeing an SG901 of course the number is not relevant. If it's arcing there is a problem. If you bought it supposedly working and now you have this problem, it's possible that transportation caused some contamination to move into the gun area. You can try laying the monitor on its face and tap the neck gently with something wooden. Also note that a cracked tube neck can cause this also so examine the neck first.

I just looked over these prints some more and I found SG901. It's not where I originally suspected. It comes off the flyback transformer. So your problem may more likely be in the HV section. Of course this area can be difficult to trouble shoot if your not familiar with these circuits.

I inspected the CRT and tapped it like you said, still the same thing. I'm going to take it apart and hope its just a bad solder joint somewhere. I brought this thing home on the bus so it was a bit of a rough ride. I just hope the CRT is ok.

Make sure the spark gap device doesn't have any dust lodged in the gap. Solder joints to check would be around the flyback and any transformers in that area. Also look for any split, thin disc shaped caps in that area.

is it possible that the flyback transformer is internally arcing? I can't find anything wrong visually.. but it does sound like something bad is going on inside the flyback transformer.

Thanks for all the help... sigh I thought I finally had a fw900 but alas I think that this one is finished. If someone wants one for parts or thinks they can fix it send me a PM.

What do you think is wrong? Main tube or flyback? If it is the flyback what's the part number on it?

I'd like to think its just the flyback, but it may have taken the crt with it. I just put it all back together but I can find you the part number later today.... I'm just sick of looking at it right now.

I've got a pair of Lacie electronblue 22s (diamondtrons) which work wonderfully and have low hours. I've just always wanted the fw900 because it was the best.

Say, is it the same part number for the 21'' G520P?
