To clarify my question, can ChromaPure act as an external controller for a Radiance to access non-CMS related features such as controls for scaling or deinterlacing? I wouldn't think it does, but if so that's definitely a big bonus in addition to the already amazing auto-cal feature.

Scaling and deinterlacing have nothing to do with calibration, so no, ChromaPure doesn't do any of that. That would be like using a blender to turn on your TV. Wink

Yup. Watch the auto-calibration video I posted above. It's also on our ChromaPure order page here along with a bunch of other videos: http://www.curtpalme.com/ChromaPure.shtm

You can check off which items you want to calibrate including Gamma, Greyscale, or Color Gamut. You can do 1, 2 or all 3. You can also set the target profile (Rec601 SDTV or Rec709 HDTV).

That auto calibration just looks too slick. I didn't think these meters would read that quickly though.

Well then YOU show me a better way to make smoothies while simultaneously controlling my TV to watch my shows! Mr. Green

You took the words right out of my mouth. But I'm so interested I may need to get the wife ordering.

Guys, got a bead on a used Pioneer Pro-FPJ1 (RS2 clone). If I could dump the RS1 and get the Pioneer for a net increase of around $500 would it be worth it? Are the primaries any better on this projector than the RS1?

No, the gamut is very similarly oversaturated, as is the gamut on all of JVC's projectors. The only thing the RS2 will give you is 11-point parametric greyscale/gamma, but you still won't get any gamut controls. Plus you get double the RS1's CR, but you get 100 lumens less as well.

Not sure on how much you're looking to spend, but someone just put an FPJ1 up for sale bundled with a Radiance XE for $3K on Videogon. If I were you I'd jump all over that, at that price you're essentially getting the FPJ1 for free, or a Radiance XE for $1K-$1.5K.

That's a good price if you're in the market for an XE, but if you don't need the extra inputs, that's the same cost as a NEW Radiance Mini which comes with warranty/support/etc.

Or he could just buy the RS45.

The RS45 only has greyscale and gamma adjustments, nothing for gamut. He'd still need an external box for that.

That may be true, but he might be satisfied with a RS45 out of the box. Buying an older JVC means adding an outboard box and buying a meter.

Buying ANY JVC without a CMS means adding an outboard box - this includes the RS45. The meter is a requirement for any kind of calibration that extends beyond brightness/contrast - the OP seems interested in an in-depth calibration, so the meter is a given.

Plus part of our discussion earlier was that buying an external box - like the Radiance - allows one an enormous amount of flexibility with future projector purchases, as you don't have to worry about issues like the functionality or capabilities of the projector's on-board controls. The FPJ1/Radiance combo is cheaper than an RS45, and if in the future he decides to upgrade his FPJ1 he can get any projector he wants, knowing that he'll be able to calibrate it with the Radiance.

It was actually worth a good laugh when I read it. I wouldn't have ended my post with a Smile if I hadn't enjoyed yours!

Not necessarily. The RS45 isn't as far out as the older JVCs. If Drop wants to be spot on, then a CMS is needed. If close is good enough, then the RS45 might be good enough. Having seen the RS45 at Cedia, I would probably be content with it out of the box.

Yes your combo gives more functionality and gives the advantage of moving to newer pjs. On the flip side, the RS45 is new with a warranty along with the advantages that a newer model brings. At $2599 pre-order, the JVC is a great price.

Not to be argumentative, but "good enough" is highly subjective, and isn't the same as "accurate." Either the OP wants an accurate image or he doesn't. I've already stated that, when I had my RS1's and my RS2, I never watched any of them and said "holy crap this picture is egregious I can't even look at it." Yes, the difference was noticeable once I calibrated my RS1 and did a quick A/B by turning my Radiance's CMS on and off, but even then the overwhelming majority of people looking at the exact same demos would be happy with an RS1 or RS2 out of the box (i.e., either would be "good enough" for far less money than an RS45). One can go back and forth all day regarding the pros and cons of an RS1/2 with a VP compared to an RS45. In the end, it depends on whether or not he wants a VP (that he can use long-term) and a used projector, or a new projector for roughly the same price.

BTW, taking a look at the accuracy of the RS45's gamut, the only actual gamut data I've seen on the RS45 was posted over on AVForums.com for the projector's REC709 preset. Although the saturation and hue of the primaries and secondaries are relatively close to their respective targets, their luminance (Y values) is lower than their targets by a noticeable amount - especially blue, which is off by -13% to -19%! That data shouldn't be accepted as representative of all RS45's without being checked on multiple units, but if it's right I would consider that to be an unusable preset with such a gross error in blue, and I certainly wouldn't consider it "good enough."

Yes, you get the advantage of a warranty and having all the "latest and greatest" with a new model, but with it comes the uncertainties of a model that hasn't been fully wrung out and tested. I currently am trying to sell an RS50 that, although is a great projector, has an annoyingly touchy CMS and a (now-solved) bulb dimming issue that is scaring people away from wanting it used - and my warranty makes no difference on either of these (officially, anyways). With a used PJ at least you have a known quantity as far as a projector's performance strengths and shortcomings. Having been on both sides of the fence (new and used equipment) it's really 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

So, the RS20 is still a good item to have.
