Need a cheapie for a classroom. Will be driven by VGA laptop, maybe occasional DVD player.
Must be brand new, no eBay or VideoGon.

I find it hard to believe that you'll find a new LCD for $300 of any kind..

I know Infocus 102s are $340 at newegg now and would throw 800x600. I have seen the 104s setup on a conference room table for a small class and it was more than sufficient...could probably work for a 25/30 person room in a pinch.
By classroom, what do you mean wrt to size/brightness -- 8 people at a table or 70 people in a lecture hall?

Thanks for the input. It's for a school room with 25-30 kids.
We found a tiny portable LED projector for cheap, but did not buy it because the spec said 33 lumens! Benefit is long life, no bulb to replace.
