This is the key for acer ultimate:

Try that and report back.

If that does not work you may need to install the acer certificate. If that still does not work you may not have a SLIC built into your bios... but I have not seen that on any oem built since win7 came out.

This is what I get:

"ENTER A DIFFERENT UPGRADE KEY

The upgrade key you entered is for an edition of Windows that does not work with Windows Anytime Upgrade. Enter a different upgrade key."

How do I install the acer certificate?

All right Jeremy this is indeed starting to suck.

For starters, if I had your pc here i am sure I could get this going in no time. However, over the boards is another story. Since you are contemplating formatting anyway, I don' think you can get in too much trouble because worst case, you just format.

Almost certainly you have a win7 SLIC on the motherboard. However, it might be a good idea to check this first before you waste a lot of time. If you don't already have a SLIC for win7 than the motherboard requires a bios hack and this starts to become illegal. I only recommend doing these things if you already have a win7 SLIC in the bios.

The below thread has TONS of good information for you.
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/7126-The-Official-Windows-7-Repository

To check your SLIC status, you need to download the SLIC dump toolkit called "SLIC_ToolKit_V3.2.rar" I googled and found a copy at the link below: http://www.mediafire.com/?32d40zdwgio

Unzip and run the program. The bottom left of the program will have a line called status just after it runs. It should say in green text something like "acer" and "v2.1." If not, you may not have a win7 slic. Click the "advanced" button and look at the slic diagnostics section. It should say acer and version 2.1.

Got that far?

Yes 2.1

Got this:
"On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe
0x2a 0xCOO4F015' to display the error text.
Error: 0xC004F015"

Also created Administrator account, tried installing Ultimate Key there too and running slui.exe.

Same thing doesn't recognize key.

Wonder if Win7 drivers will work in XP?

I doubt it, because HAL was removed between those versions.

What is slui.exe?

I think you can just run opatool, install acer cert, restart, anytime upgrade with ultimate key.

The other thing you can do is download the win7 oem disc, install fresh with no cd key, run opatool to install cert and key.

Or you can build win7 oem dvd with the oem key and cert already on the disc and just install for auto activation after the install (this is what I do).

Apparently I use Win7 Starter. No matter how many times I try to update it All the new netbooks come with it. XP home seems to be a thing of the past.

Ubuntu wouldn't run correctly. I had no network, no sound and bad video.
Plus there are no drivers for the stuff I want to run for Linux.

Where do you get the Win 7 disk from? My netbook only came with restore disks.

While I haven't done exactly what you're trying to do, I have built 9 different computers in the last two weeks, installing Win7 Pro on every one, even the one that was so old I had to use a special boot disc that had a Win XP hybrid boot section...

There is a step by step guide out there for EVERYTHING, it just means a bit of reading...

I did the step by step, over and over, did hours of reading tried everything Craig told me to and tried a bunch of stuff from the forums. That little SOB refuses to take the upgrade.

I can install from scratch too, that's easy. This is the first retarded Winblows 7 upgrade I've had to deal with. I tell you if there were XP drivers for that netbook this would be a done deal weeks ago.
