My screen is 72x54. Is it possible (or advisable) to go with a shorter throw distance than the 92" and 96" the manual and PJC spit out?

Yes, as long as you don't exceed the ability of the projector to re-aim the red and blue tube assemblies and perform geometry and convergence adjustments. There are limits on how much adjustment is available.

Shorter throws require more extreme adjustments, and especially in the case of the convergence amplifiers, bigger adjustments
apply more stress to the amplifiers which shortens their life. G70s are known to have issues with convergence amplifiers burning out,
so if you can manage a setup that requires the usage of less convergence adjustment, the convergence board will thank you for it.

You can use this as a guide to gauge width vs. distance. Just note these tube rasters are pretty much maxed at this ratio.
