after getting fascinated by the idea to ugrade my homecinema to 3D with a 3D-Theatre device I needed to learn that my beamer (U2 1110) is not capable of framelocking (vertical refresh would only be 60Hz anyway). So I tried to find a replacement (DLP w/ 1280x720@120Hz) and had to learn that almost all "3D ready" advertised beamers can do 120Hz at best in 1024x678 but not in 720p.
Is there any beamer available at all that can do 720p@120Hz and has a throw ratio of 1.3 ..1.4 ? My screen is 2.35m wide but the PJ must at ~3.3m distance.
Well, the best solution to the nightmare would be of course if the 3D-Theatre could output 1024x768@120Hz (anamorphotic).
Any ideas ?
kind regards,
Chily.
PS: My current setup is a 4:3 PJ with anamorphot and scaler to get a large 16:9 picture at the short distance. A smaller image is not an option.

Have you checked the Optoma HD66? Only problem though is minimum throw is 3.05m. Not sure you get the image size you desire at that distance.

Thanks for your reply. I looked at it, but the throw ratio doesn't seem to fit. Apart from that, they don't really state which modes work in 3D; actually, not a single 120 Hz mode is listed.
After some research I found one from viewsonic. The throw ratio fits, its capable of 120 Hz and they provide a suitable 3D processor for it too. The only downside is, its brand new and currently sold out. It also has a RGBCYW colorwheel and I don't know how to rate this.

I've seen it discussed on the AVS Forum as well and briefly read some of the threads, that might be a good choice as well.
In your research one thing to keep in mind if you are considering the VIP product as an interface, and I'm going to revisit
the Optoma HD66 as an example since we mentioned it earlier.
One of the main things to look for as well is the V-Sync Range. Notice the HD66 is:
V-Sync Range: 24 - 120Hz and available signal inputs: HDTV: 720p, 1080i, 1080p/60
VIP Theater/Displayer will utilize a portion of the range of the V-sync frequency 60/120 depending on it's #1 Dipswitch setting and produce the 720P image accordingly. Since the HD66 will reach 120Hz it will function on that setting too.
If you install before the AVR HDMI input you have the possibility of rescaling that image to 1080P/60/24 depending on the capability of receiver.
I've done that myself with my Pioneer VSX33.
So in essence the VIP units just produce their own 3D signal and input on any available HDMI port of the display device.
Whatever units you compare just review the screen resolutions and V-Sync ranges and things should work with the VIP.
If you have any other questions by all means revisit.
