It depends on the kind of material your viewing. I'm really into classic gaming and my HD+ made a huge difference on my Sony lcd; less so on my current crt setup. If you keep an eye out you can score one for 50 dollars which I believe is worth it just to check it out.

I hesitate saying this, but why not go for a higher end used Lcos JVC? I don't really follow them, but I haven't heard of any rampant problems, so I'd say a used RS1 or 2 would be a really good deal.

Yup, agreed.
You won't have any of the dot crawl, motion artifacting and improper scaling you mentioned...
However, you'll still need the VIP if you want really dial in color, gamma, greyscale as most do not have very good (or any) controls for that.
I'd pick a Radiance Mini over a DVDO Duo in a heartbeat because (IMHO) it's a much better VP. Even if was even, I'd get one for these reasons only quoted on our Radiance order page:
Quote:
Buy once, use forever!
The Radiance 3D is the only video processor that we know of that, over the years, has kept up with new features and offered upgrades to existing users - often through completely free software upgrades! Most other companies we know of do not do this. Instead, they make you buy a new model as new features are introduced. You don't hear this often but CurtPalme.com is comfortable in saying that the Radiance is the one true "buy once, use forever" video processor that has stood the test of time. The Radiance is completely over engineered with processing power that has proven that it can take on just about anything. Truly phenomenal support from Jim Peterson and his crew!
DVDO has a bad habit of immediately dropping all support and new features on a VP when a newer model comes out.
Lumagen's the opposite. 3D didn't even exist when the Radiance architecture was conceived but it still supports it (and allows adjustments) completely. I don't really care about 3D, but it's just an example.
I help sell both. Who runs DVDO? I have no idea. Lumagen? I can pick up the phone and talk to Jim (the prez) or Tamara Peterson directly or any of their staff directly. I like that. Talk to anyone who owns one.
