Hi Everyone,
The Lumagen Forum is still down so I am posting here.

The last week, my XS+ does not power up for about 2mins before I get a picture.
When I power up my sytem, I have the Lumagen set for power "ON", and last video input.

I get the Green power "ON" led, then I get the led change to red, which turns bright and a pulses little dimmer/brighter,
Then I get a relay click, the red led goes off,and no image,

This seems to cycle for 5 or 6 times, then I get what looks like a 4bit video output,
then over the next 1min, it gets to normal video output.

The input Component 576i@50hz, and output 1080p@75hz.
but using any input has the same problem.

Is this a known problem?
or does it sound like a power supply problem?

I am watching the F1 at the moment, but check the power supply once the race is finished.

Apreciate any comments.
Cheers
Steve

There was a bad batch of power supplies that have been dropping dead lately. I would start by contacting Lumagen and asking for a new supply and explaining the symptoms.

Or since you are in Switzerland, you may just want to go out and buy a new PS at a local shop.

Thanks craigr.

I pulled the original, pretty warm after a couple of hrs of watching.
Shame I have nothing lying around with that amount of current available.

5v@ 5amps

Will pick something up local, with more amps, and better regulation.

Has anyone built a linear power supply for the Lumagen?
Improvements??

So, this is what I found,
a 1000uF capacitor swelled, with a value of only 379uF.

Pics of the repair. now I just need to test and report back if it is now fixed.

Cheers

Cheers craigr,
The power supply capacitor was the problem
Replaced swollen capacitor,with a 2200uF as I didn't have a 1000uF one.

Soldered in, powered up, all is perfect.
Normal power up. No issues, Excellent.

Good reference to others who have had this problem.

When in doubt, check the e-caps! Good work Steve.

Cheers Kal,
amazing that all the power supplies I have repaired over the last 2 weeks have been e-caps.
Lumagen, 2x Popcorn C200's and a couple of Sony amplifiers.

Shame that Lumagen has gone cheap for the power supply.
I will build a linear power supply next week.

Cheers

Good work.

However please don't blame Lumagen. We have been using this brand for the entire time Lumagen has existed and have never had troubles. Now all of a sudden the maker has cheapened their line while keeping the prices the same. Lumagen has just changed vendors and is no longer using this company for their supplies.

I have tried very high end linear supplies with the XE... makes no difference in performance.

Kind regards,
craigr

Well, once again, my power supply is playing up again,
I had an image that looked like 6bit image, solid blocks in the image, rather than real life textures,

So I unplugged the power supply from the XS+, then back in, all fixed.
Next day, all was good no issues,
then the next day, same 6bit image issues.

Pulled the power suplly out, felt very warm to the touch, replaced the capacitor again. All seems good again.

As it was running so warm, thought I might do a current check to see how much power is being used by the XS+.
Averages between 1.5 to 3amps peak.

The power supply is a 5amp unit, would hate to see it when running 5amps output, you would be able to cook an egg on it.

Now I am looking to replace with a better unit.
Any suggestions??

I am looking at something like this,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160573841771

Appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Cheers
Steve

Steve: If your bought your Radiance from a Lumagen authorized reseller (and not used) I'd contact Lumagen. I believe there have been some changes to the power supplies they've used over the years. They may send you a new one.

Yes was an authorized dealer in germany, will get in touch and see what they can do,
As I have already opened the original, not sure they will warrantee it.

I wouldn't worry about the fact that you've already opened it.

Yes, Lumagen has switched vendors for the power supplies and is now using ones that we hope are better. The new ones are no longer "wall arts," but are more like notebook power supplies with a cord.

I don't think you will have any trouble getting your PS warrantied even after opening it (can't say for sure), but Lumagen knows they have been problematic and has not denied coverage on them. If your vendor does not have the new supplies or denies coverage I would send an email directly to Lumagen support and see what they say. You can even explain that you opened it and that replacing the cap fixed it once (link them to this thread). I never bothered to open a dead one before since they are so cheap and I bet Lumagen hasn't either. They might be curious as to what you found with the dead cap.

Yeah, you would think a 5amp supply would be fine for such a low current device, but the old PSs just suck I guess. It is frustrating when a vendor lowers quality without informing buyers. Lumagen had been using those supplies for years and then suddenly they just weren't as good as they used to be. The vendor actually started charging more if I remember correctly.

I have replaced a ton of these on client machines and Lumagen has not charged me for any that were purchased within the past couple years. Lumagen doesn't want to be associated with their old power supply vendor's lack of quality.

My wife left for Germany yesterday afternoon. If I had known about this yesterday morning I could have sent one with her to mail from inside the country.

Oh well, we'll be in Germany again in May, but I doubt you will want to wait that long Wink

Oh wait, you are in Switzerland... but you got the Radiance from a German dealer? Is there a dealer in Switzerland that you are aware of? It might be worth checking because if a dealer has an order coming in they may be able to bundle shipping with their order.
